Events on the Day of Judgement

  al-ʿAllāmah Shaykh ʿUbayd al-Jābirī

There are several events that will occur on the Day of Judgement, the Day when the people will be gathered awaiting their fates. They will be covered in sweat, all the way up to their throats because of their fear of what awaits them. Each person will be concerned about his own self, not his children, his spouse, his brother, his sister, or his parents. What a terrible day that will be! Allāh has promised intercession only for those who say "La ilāha ill-Allāh." Shaykh ʿUbayd elucidates. Translated by Abū Ḥakīm Bilāl Davis. (From the 2012 Dawrah, hosted by the brothers at Salafī Publications.)

Al-sirāt (the bridge) over the Hellfire is true.

Linguistically, in the Arabic language, sirāt refers to a clear, straight path. In the dīn, it is a bridge that is established over Jahannam on the Day of Judgement. The believers will cross that bridge according to their actions.

There are numerous narrations establishing the existence of this bridge. There are those who will pass over the bridge like the blinking of an eye, or like the wind, or like lightning, or like a camel walking, and there are some who will be crawling, being clawed by the metal hooks on the sides of the bridge. and from them are those who will fall into the Hellfire.

Ahl al-sunnah has established that this bridge is true.

Al-mizān (the scales) is true.

mizān (scales), in the Arabic language, refers to an instrument used for a particular purpose. It indicates something that is measured or weighed

The mizān will be established on the Day of Judgement. Whoever's scales are heavy, they will be successful. Those whose scales are light, they will be in the Hellfire forever.

There are Āhādīth and Āyāts referring to these scales.

What will be weighed?

The servants themselves will be weighed. We have proof of this from the Ḥadīth in which a heavy-looking man will come on the Day of Judgement but when he is weighed, he will be lighter than a mosquito because of his deeds.

Actions themselves will be weighed as well. From the things that are weighed are the scrolls of deeds. The Messenger (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said that a man will be brought on the Day of Judgement and he will be presented before the people. There will be brought forward ninety-nine scrolls of evil deeds. He will be asked if he rejects anything from it and he will say, "No."  Allāh will ask him, "Have My angels wronged you in any way?" and, "Do you have any excuse?" The man will answer, "No." Allāh will ask, "Do you have any good deeds?" The man will reply, "No." And Allāh will say, "Yes you have a good deed." It will be a small card with the following written on it: “La ilaha ill-Allāh, and it will be placed on the scale, but it will weigh more than all the scrolls of evil deeds."

Al-hawd (the pool) is true.

Al-hawd, which the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) has been honoured with, is true. Linguistically, in the Arabic language, it means something that gathers water in abundance. That the Prophet is honoured with his own hawd is established in the Sunnah.

Al-Shafāʿah (the intercession) is true.

There is intercession of the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) that are specific to him. There are three that are specific to him that no one shares with him: 1.the main intercession to start the reckoning, 2. the intercession for his uncle, Abū Ṭālib, that would cause him to be in the lighter parts of the Hellfire, 3. the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) will intercede for the believers who are on the plain between the bridge and the Jannah so that they can enter Jannah. There are general intercessions that are shared along with the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) by other prophets and by the angels. The Shaykh explains all these different types of intercessions in detail and exposes some of the different groups who do not believe in them.

It is obligatory to believe in the existence of all of these things.
