Allāh Is Over His Creation and His Throne in Particular

  Abū ʿUways

In a highly beneficial khuṭbah, Abū ʿUways (raḥimahullāh) taught and insightfully explained the correct Muslim belief of Allāh's ʿUlūʾ, Allāh's Highness, Allāh's Loftiness, saying, "Allāh is above everything in general, and above His Throne in particular."

Benefit: Accept a Taʿdil (Praise) over a Jarḥ (Detailed Criticism)..with a Proposal for Your Daughter?

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Abū ʿUways (rahimahullāh), the late Imam of Masjid Rahmah, Newark, USA, explains with some emphatic examples, the reality of weighing a jarh (detailed criticism) against a ta'dīl (general praise). As was the intelligent style of our noble brother, he made crystal clear the lunacy of counterbalancing or elevating a general statement of praise for an individual above a clear warning or criticism. He asks: would you accept the ta'dīl (general praise) of a brother who wishes to marry your daughter over the jarh (detailed criticism) against him in the community? However, some wish us to accept this approach when dealing with innovators (Halabī et al). A 2 minute clip of clarity to help combat the next time you hear: But Shaykh so and so praised him.

Benefit: Concerning Those Who Try to Break Up the Community

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Benefit: Concerning Those Who Try to Break Up the Community - Creating Rival Centres/Platforms in the name of Salafiyyah?

The late Abū ʿUways (raḥimahullāh), in approximately 2003, discusses those who speak against their local salafī masjid/centre. A phenomenon that happens nowadays also, wherein a person speaks ill of the salafī masjid/centre, then throws his/her arms up in protest when people (rightfully) place a question mark over his/her head. The objective of him/her speaking ill of their Salafī masjid/centre is to cast doubts and carve out legitimacy for a rival organisation, with of course, they, the rabble-rousers, as custodians of this rival organisation.  He states:

"If a brother calls for something, that is in opposition to the Sunnah, for instance he says: 'leave Masjid Raḥmah, go somewhere else...', then OF COURSE HE SHOULD BE WARNED AGAINST. He is calling to separation, calling the people away from the asl, which is to gather (unite) upon the haqq. OF COURSE HE SHOULD BE WARNED AGAINST. What is he calling to? (He's) calling to separation. We don't take it as seriously as we should take it, because we have never understood the fruits and benefits of unity, and how precious unity is. Unity is expensive (and precious), we don't understand that yet, or very few of us do, so every little mishap, 'Oh, i'm going my way, let me get my bat and ball and play with somebody else', this type of mentality, this type of childish, infantile mentality. Rather than maintain your unity with your brother, to stay and deal with the harms (a person's imperfections), he might say a loose word, he might treat you a little rough, but you hang in there because you understand the importance of unity, and you're Ahl al-Sunnah wa-al-Jamāʿah, those who stick to the Sunnah and gather and unite upon it. When they (those who jump to separate) understand this asl (foundation), then we will see a lot of improvement, right now, many of our salafī brothers are going through what the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said..."Shaytān has given up any hope of ever being worshipped in the Arabian peninsula, but he seeks to make confusion and differences between you". This is what the game is now. Create confusion and differences. Make them (the people) differ, make them fall out (with one another). Make it where they can't have any unity. Make them fight one another. Make them hate one another. Make them turn back from one another. After Allāh (subḥanahu wa-taʿālá), our greatest strength is unity, and we're going to lose it? It is almost like they are (rogue)...a group of guys who infiltrate, and their whole thing is to mess up everything, from the inside out. It's ridiculous, fights flowing, everyone going majnūn (crazy)...the old rule, divide and conquer seems to still be amongst us!

This advice is more than a decade old and serves to remind us of two important points:

1) For the person who takes the position, "I don't like fitnah and I stay away from controversy", then inevitably, he/she will fall right into it. The reason being that a) you don't know the haqq from the bāṭil b) you don't have enough ghīrah for the people of Sunnah. Decades ago, people used to say this and when the fitnah of QSS/Maʿrabī/Ḥalabī arose, they fell right into it because they "don't like fitnah..." Now, decades on, they followed QSS to the Abū Hurayrah Centre and right into the denizens of al-Maghrib institute, far, far away from Salafiyyah. If you ask them today, they'll still tell you, "We're staying away from the fitnah".

2) These doubts and trials that Abū ʿUways spoke about are a generation ago. These same types of doubts and same times of fitnah occur today. The only difference is that inventing a platform to separate is accelerated by creating multiple twitter accounts (and following literally everyone) and flooding social media with memes, youtube videos etc. to look flashy and viable. The point is that the tools change, the objectives remain the same. Raise doubts - invent an alternative - call to separation (of course all in the name of unity and daʿwah). Such was done by madeenah.con (FOL), QSS before them etc. etc.

The bottom line is: Stick closely to the jamāʿah, look to people who try to discourage this with contempt, they are not deserving of your ear or your trust, admonish them to fear Allāh. May Allāh grant you and us safety upon the Sunnah!

Benefit: Give What You Can O Salafī!

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

An admonition from the late Abū ʿUways (raḥimahullāh) to the community to give...to give before the time comes when there will be no one to give zakāh to. He laments how we used to spend money and support frivilous causes in jahilliyah or before coming to the Sunnah. He also gives an example of the one who claims to love Salafīyyah but does not want to give to the masjid because he doesn't agree with some of the people on the shūrah or how they run the masjid. He asks: you don't see it, ilm-online (telelinks), students of knowledge overseas, connections to the schoalrs etc (the Shaytān is real!)? A straight-talking clear advice about giving and not wastintg the opportunity to aid the daʿwah.

Benefit: Given the Choice - Marry a Sister upon the Sunnah or a Sister upon Innovation?

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

ʿImrān ibn Hitān, al-Sunnī (meaning that he was a sunnī) thumma (then he became a) al-Khārijī: He adopted the madh-hab of the khawārij during the later stages of his life. The reason for that was his cousin (female) was of the madh-hab of the khawārij, so he wanted to make her change; however, she ended up making him change to her madh-hab!1

Ibn Kathīr further stated:

“‘ʿImrān ibn Hitaan Al-Khaarijee: At first he was from Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jamāʿah. However he married a very beautiful woman from the Khawārij and he loved her immensely, whereas he was unattractive. Thus he wanted to change her to the Sunnah but she refused, hence he deviated along with her to her madh-hab. He was a prolific poet. He is the one who praised the killer of ʿAlī (ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muljim) by stating the following:

"A strike from an ever-repentant one; he did not do it except to attain the pleasure of the One who possesses the ‘Arsh.

Indeed, I will always remember this act for I consider him one to be of the most faithful servants in the sight of Allāh."2

Imām al-Dhahabī's wife told him, "I and you will be in Jannah together because you were blessed (i.e. to have a very pretty wife) and you showed gratitude, and I was tested and I was patient."3

As Abū ‘Āliyyah said, “Two favours Allāh bestowed upon me and I don’t know which is greater than the other: the first one is that He made me a Muslim, and second is that He did not make me a Harooree (i.e. a Khaarijee).”4

Benefit: How the Salaf Dealt with Ahl al-Bidʿah vs. Some of the Astray Youth of Today

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Shaykh Rabīʿ ibn Hādī al-Madkhalī, in his book The Methodology of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamāʿah in Criticizing Men, Books and Groups, says,

"Let the person look at this great difference between the position of the Muslims that Shaykh al-Islām ibn Taymīyyah is talking about, and how they dealt with those who had statements of opposition (to the Salaf); they were individuals explaining the circumstances of those people and warning the Ummah from those people, and this was wājib (obligatory) by agreement of the Muslims. Then look to the reality nowadays of many of those who connect themselves to Salafīyyah and other than them, how they consider warning against bidʿah and its people as being harsh and severe.

How far is the distance between these two positions (when it comes to warning against the people of innovation), and woe to the strangeness of this dīn and woe to the strangeness of those who defend and protect the dīn! For by Allāh! Verily the position they are taking has many effects. There are youth from the Salafīs who mix and start to become a part of a group that is astray, and will defend that astray group and have loyalty for that group and have enmity and hatred for that group, and some of them get with other groups, as others have done and live in a state of confusion. Some of them will become jealous of and protect Ahl al-Bidʿah more than they are jealous and protective over the Manḥaj al-Salafī and its people.

O Allah save your dīn! O Allāh, save this daʿwah! O Allāh support this daʿwah! Verily you are the One who answers duʿāʾ. For verily Your dīn and its supporters are in severe strangeness, they have been abandoned by those whom they used to hope would help; and the people of Ahl al-Bidʿah are being harsh upon them, and there is no supporter except you, for you are the Best Guardian and the best of those who help."

This is the state of affairs today between the Salafīs. For this individual did not understand the Manḥaj of the Salaf, and so now you find him in love with Ahl al-Bidʿah and still calling himself a Salafī, and Allāh’s aid and assistance is sought..1

Benefit: Principles in the Salafī Manhaj in Dealing with Refutation and the Refuted One

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Principles in the Salafī Manhaj in Dealing with Refutation and the Refuted One May 31st, 2004 - A lecture delivered by Abū ʿUways ʿAbdullāh Aḥmad ʿAlī (raḥimahullāh), former Imām of Masjid Rahmah, Newark, NJ, USA. A prime example of his work and effort to not only decimate knowledge but hammer-down issues of manhaj for the clarity of his community and the benefit of the Salafīs in America at large (the antithesis of what some speakers would like to introduce of cooperation and ease with Ahl al-Bidʿah, look to his efforts, Uṣūl al-Thalāthah, Kitāb al-Tawḥīd, ʿAqīdah, Usūl, Manhaj, directness with issues of fitnah). This was his da'wah, clear and direct - conveying the statements of the scholars. Now this lecture (entitled: "The Deception of Abū Usamah Khalifah") may be in reference to the activities of a specific individual but pay close attention to the manhaj principles in this talk - they apply to all times, modern and olden. Gems and jewels - take heed! From the points obtained: The manhaj is nothing if not practised, nor acted upon! How do we respect the scholars and their critical statements of a man? A Scholar refutes an individual (jarh), do we look for a ta'deel (praise) and move forward in our cooperation with him?

How easily we become emotionally affected; all the books of Ahl al-ʿIlm (principles) out the window - when a person simply claims 'rectification' or 'tawbah', not lending one's ears to the innovator (this was the way of the Salaf)! The distinguishing sign of Ahl al-Sunnah: they are CLEAR from Ahl al-Bidʿah; the Banner of Sunnah never mixes with the Banner of Bidʿah. What is the benefit of the Scholars if we don't follow their word, instructions and warnings? Avoid Ahl al-Bidʿah! The Scholars do not speak in Jest! The ranks of the Muslims are weakened when we are silent about innovation and its people (like the guard who leaves his post)! Giving the innovator a position to speak is aiding the enemy!!! Allāh is the changer of the hearts (and He changes them as he wills) - do not love someone so much so that you cannot leave them (if/when they speak against ahl al-sunnah). Athar of the Salaf: "He who beautifies the status of an innovator has aided in the destruction of Islām." How many articles, audios on the topic of bid'ah but when will we take notice?

The refutation of an 'aalim is not negated with the ta'deel of another 'aalim or student of knowledge. Sincerity (on the part of the criticized one) is to return to the Scholar who criticized him and seek to fix his problems! Returning to the Kibaar (major Scholars) in times of fitnah and regarding people of fitnah. Do not  let personal discretion interfere with the ruling of a scholar (on a man). It is forbidden to listen to the mubtadi'. "It is as if we are tied up with the dunyā - so much so that we don't pay attention to manhaj." (Don't drift in/out of issues of the dīn - it will lead to your confusion; safeguard your dīn and be diligent, following up issues not isolating yourself). Be thaabit; be upright; don't be emotional (speaker mentions, "if not at Masjid Rahmah, then some other men..." i.e. anyone of us can be replaced if we aren't going to stand up and defend the sunnah). Abū ʿUways mentioned "...We study ahl al-bid'ah all day in a book and then when one is physically in front of you you don't know what to do? That means your knowledge is theoretical, nothing to do with your real life...what's the benefit of studying it if we aren't going to act upon it...a matter of just studying something, sitting somewhere to pass the time?!" Keep up on issues; do not be ignorant! Do not separate based on personal issues (frivolity). Don't become astonished with yourself (your 'knowledge/judgement in matters'?) for you will destroy yourself. Not recognising the mistakes of the refuted one is not an excuse to continuing following him! Al-Usūl al-Daʿwah al-Salafīyyah is constant, generation upon generation, as for Ahl al-Bidʿah, they are constantly innovating/evolving, new tricks, new schemes. Take note and protect yourself!

Benefit: Taking Knowledge from the Elder Scholars

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Abū ʿUways on taking knowledge from the senior scholars This is a tremendous benefit, taken from the lecture entitled 'The Importance of Sticking to the Scholars', from our beloved brother Abū ʿUways ʿAbdullāh Aḥmad ʿAlī (raḥimahullāh). In this lecture he (raḥimahullāh) describes some of the characteristics of the true scholars. One of the main characteristics that our noble brother (raḥimahullāh) mentions is the characteristic of old age. He mentions that in most cases being elderly is a key trait that the scholars have, except in certain rare cases. Our beloved brother (raḥimahullāh) goes on to mention the reasons why one should not take knowledge from those young in age and the many deficiencies they may have. Listen, so that you may benefit from this clarification that precedence is to be given to those scholars who are elder in age whose knowledge is agreed upon by the scholars in his time.

Benefit: The Old Game - Divide and Conquer

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

In the Qurʾān, Allāh subḥānahu wa taʿālā mentions the story of Ādam and Iblīs. Allāh reminds us that Shayṭān is a clear enemy to mankind. From his tricks and plots is to cause disunity in the ranks of the Muslims and sow seeds of discord among them. Our elder, Abū ʿUways, raḥimahullāh, offers an important reminder about this old game that Shayṭān often plays. Listen to this short audio. May Allāh reward you and unite us and all the Muslims upon the truth.

Benefit: The Origin is Unity - Those Who Insist on Breakaway Masjids

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Benefit: The Origin is Unity: Those Who Insist on Breakaway Masjids

The late Abū ʿUways (raḥimahullāh), in approximately 2003, discusses those who speak against their local salafī masjid/centre. In a follow up to this benefit, he discusses those who insist on the need for new masjids in their communities (for a variety of reasons/excuses), which is often a means of disunity and splitting. Nowadays, rather than focus on the communal benefit of togetherness, some are entirely focused on legitimising the need for new centres or new leadership. The origin is to work together, to aid, to build, not to separate and start anew.

Benefit: The Sacredness of the Muslim

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

The sacredness of the believer in Allāh includes his honour, his wealth, and his life. Allāh, subḥānahu wa taʿālā, in His Legislation, prohibits any actions which infringe on the nature of this sanctity. These prohibitions include killing, beating, cursing, backbiting, slandering, and stealing. When Muslims transgress against themselves by committing these actions, do they realize the sacredness that they are violating? Our elder, Abū ʿUways, raḥimahullāh, delivers a stern reminder about the reality of this affair. Listen to this clip as an admonition, for the admonition benefits the believers. May Allāh, al-Raḥmān al-Raḥīm, forgive us and all the Muslims.

Class: al-Kitāb al-Tawḥīd

  Abū ʿUways

Our beloved brother, Abū ʿUways (raḥimahullāh), translates a 4-part lecture titled al-Kitāb al-Tawḥīd from the Imām of al-Jarḥ wa-al-Taʿdīl, al-ʿAllāmah Rabīʿ ibn Hādī al-Madkhalī, on February 24th, 2003. All of the prophets of Allāh had the same fundamental principles. The battles, disagreements, animosity, and wars with other nations and religions all centred around Tawḥīd al-ʿUbūdiyyah (oneness of Allāh in His worship).

Defining ʿIbādah

  Abū ʿUways

An insightful khuṭbah given by our dearly missed brother Abū ʿUways (raḥimahullāh) wherein we get a glimpse into the comprehensive term "al-ʿibādah" as defined by various Imāms of the Salaf .

Don't Be a Spectator - Be Distinct (التميّز)!!

  Abū ʿUways

Our beloved brother, Abū ʿUways ʿAbdullāh Aḥmad ʿAlī conveys a sound advice from Shaykh Muḥammad al-ʿAnjarī about having readiness (استعداد) to stand up and defend Islām from bid'ah, from innovators. Not to stand on the fence and be a spectator but rather to be like the person guarding his post from attack. Each one of us should bear some responsibility to defend this dīn. Shaykh Rabīʿ was asked, "What is the most important fundamental regarding al-daʿwah al-Salafiyyah?" Before Shaykh Rabīʿ could answer, the Noble Shaykh Muqbil Ibn Hādī interjected, "Distinction (التميّز)!" To be distinguished! Shaykh Muqbil used to declare this constantly! Abū ʿUways then mentions Shaykh Anjarī's advice of clarity (وضوح). Something to compare and contrast with those who fall silent in times of fitnah.
