In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Congregational supplications and sending peace and blessings upon the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) in congregation at the end of the obligatory or voluntary prayers or even in between the tarāwīḥ prayers is an newly invented innovation. It has been confirmed from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalahi wa-sallam) that he said:

Whosoever introduces into this affair of ours (i.e Islām) that which is not from it, then it is rejected.

Benefit: How to Deal with Innovations at the Janāzah

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

[Q]: If the followers of a Janāzah were practicing an innovation, should I follow the Janāzah or leave it?

Shaykh Muqbil ibn Hādī al-Wādʿī: As long as the deceased is a Muslim, the Messenger of Allāh (sallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) mentioned: “The Muslim has five rights upon a Muslim” in another narration, six rights, and from these rights is that you follow his Janāzah. So it is required that you follow the Janāzah, and if you are able to renounce the innovation, then you renounce it according to your capability, [even if it is only] renouncing it with your heart. Do not cooperate with them in their innovation, for it is an innovation. We hope that Allāh (subḥānahu wa-taʿāla) grants us understanding and grants our people understanding so that they leave off these innovations.

The Messenger of Allāh (sallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) mentioned: “There is no deceased Muslim who is prayed upon by a group of people who do not associate anything in worship with Allāh except that Allāh accepts their intercession for him [i.e. the deceased]”. So we should strive to increase the numbers of those praying [at the Janāzah]. Pray and follow the Janāzah according to the Sunnah. Allāh’s aid is sought.

Benefit: Lying Is More Repulsive Than Innovation

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Shaykh Rabīʿ ibn Hādī al-Madkhalī said: O brothers, lying is more repulsive than innovation! Lying is more repulsive to the people of the Sunnah than the one who innovates (because) the innovator can be narrated from. The Qadariyyah were narrated from, the Murjiʾah were narrated from, and other than them from the various groups of innovation as long as their innovation does not exit them from the fold of Islām and as long as they were not known for lying.

If someone was considered by the people of Sunnah to be a liar, they would regard him to be from among the people of innovation. This is why Ibn Adī (raḥimuhullāh) compiled approximately twenty-nine chapters about the liars and one chapter for the people of innovation. The people of Sunnah accepted the narrations from the people of innovation who were truthful except those who called (to their innovation).1

Benefit: O Muslims, Don't Be Fooled! The Deceptive Innovator Will Always Approach You with a Smiling Face

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

"Shaykh al-Islām al-Thānī Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allāh have mercy on him said:

And from among his (shayṭān’s) repertoire of schemes and ploys is that he invites the slave (of Allāh) with his good character, cheerfulness and joyfulness to types of sin and wickedness.  As a result, he will meet and greet him (the sunnee) with that which will not enable him to rescue himself from his evil except his display of displeasure, giving an angry look and turning away from him.  So, the enemy will act kindly towards him, greeting him with joyfulness, a glowing face and beautiful speech. Then, he will attach himself to him, and have a strong desire to save himself from his clutches; however, he will be unable to. As a result, the enemy (Iblīs) will continue to move among them (the deviant, innovator that works for Shayṭān and against the sunnee slave) until he achieves his desired goal.  Finally, he enters upon the slave with his plots by way of good character and a shining face.  It is for this reason, the 'Doctors of the Heart' have advised (us) with turning away from the People of Innovation, not extending to them the greetings of sʿaláms and happy, glowing faces or even meeting them (at all) unless it is with gloominess and sternness!"

Benefit: Principles in the Salafī Manhaj in Dealing with Refutation and the Refuted One

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Principles in the Salafī Manhaj in Dealing with Refutation and the Refuted One May 31st, 2004 - A lecture delivered by Abū ʿUways ʿAbdullāh Aḥmad ʿAlī (raḥimahullāh), former Imām of Masjid Rahmah, Newark, NJ, USA. A prime example of his work and effort to not only decimate knowledge but hammer-down issues of manhaj for the clarity of his community and the benefit of the Salafīs in America at large (the antithesis of what some speakers would like to introduce of cooperation and ease with Ahl al-Bidʿah, look to his efforts, Uṣūl al-Thalāthah, Kitāb al-Tawḥīd, ʿAqīdah, Usūl, Manhaj, directness with issues of fitnah). This was his da'wah, clear and direct - conveying the statements of the scholars. Now this lecture (entitled: "The Deception of Abū Usamah Khalifah") may be in reference to the activities of a specific individual but pay close attention to the manhaj principles in this talk - they apply to all times, modern and olden. Gems and jewels - take heed! From the points obtained: The manhaj is nothing if not practised, nor acted upon! How do we respect the scholars and their critical statements of a man? A Scholar refutes an individual (jarh), do we look for a ta'deel (praise) and move forward in our cooperation with him?

How easily we become emotionally affected; all the books of Ahl al-ʿIlm (principles) out the window - when a person simply claims 'rectification' or 'tawbah', not lending one's ears to the innovator (this was the way of the Salaf)! The distinguishing sign of Ahl al-Sunnah: they are CLEAR from Ahl al-Bidʿah; the Banner of Sunnah never mixes with the Banner of Bidʿah. What is the benefit of the Scholars if we don't follow their word, instructions and warnings? Avoid Ahl al-Bidʿah! The Scholars do not speak in Jest! The ranks of the Muslims are weakened when we are silent about innovation and its people (like the guard who leaves his post)! Giving the innovator a position to speak is aiding the enemy!!! Allāh is the changer of the hearts (and He changes them as he wills) - do not love someone so much so that you cannot leave them (if/when they speak against ahl al-sunnah). Athar of the Salaf: "He who beautifies the status of an innovator has aided in the destruction of Islām." How many articles, audios on the topic of bid'ah but when will we take notice?

The refutation of an 'aalim is not negated with the ta'deel of another 'aalim or student of knowledge. Sincerity (on the part of the criticized one) is to return to the Scholar who criticized him and seek to fix his problems! Returning to the Kibaar (major Scholars) in times of fitnah and regarding people of fitnah. Do not  let personal discretion interfere with the ruling of a scholar (on a man). It is forbidden to listen to the mubtadi'. "It is as if we are tied up with the dunyā - so much so that we don't pay attention to manhaj." (Don't drift in/out of issues of the dīn - it will lead to your confusion; safeguard your dīn and be diligent, following up issues not isolating yourself). Be thaabit; be upright; don't be emotional (speaker mentions, "if not at Masjid Rahmah, then some other men..." i.e. anyone of us can be replaced if we aren't going to stand up and defend the sunnah). Abū ʿUways mentioned "...We study ahl al-bid'ah all day in a book and then when one is physically in front of you you don't know what to do? That means your knowledge is theoretical, nothing to do with your real life...what's the benefit of studying it if we aren't going to act upon it...a matter of just studying something, sitting somewhere to pass the time?!" Keep up on issues; do not be ignorant! Do not separate based on personal issues (frivolity). Don't become astonished with yourself (your 'knowledge/judgement in matters'?) for you will destroy yourself. Not recognising the mistakes of the refuted one is not an excuse to continuing following him! Al-Usūl al-Daʿwah al-Salafīyyah is constant, generation upon generation, as for Ahl al-Bidʿah, they are constantly innovating/evolving, new tricks, new schemes. Take note and protect yourself!

Benefit: Refuting Falsehood is from Removing Harm from the Path

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Shaykh ʿAbd al-Razāq al-Badr mentioned:

The people are divided into three categories with regards to removing that which is harmful from the path.

1) Those who remove that which is harmful from the path
2) Those who discard removing that which is harmful from the path
3) Those who place that which is harmful upon the path

All of these three categories of people are from the people of īmān, but they are not equal.

There is also a very beautiful benefit in this narration, it is that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) considered the removal of that which is harmful from the path as an act of faith. The meaning of, “that which is harmful” is something tangible which harms and hinders the people from their course of achieving their worldly interests. Likewise, with all the more reason, removing that which is harmful from the path also means: removing that which hinders the people from their path towards the obedience of their Lord, and this is also considered an act of faith.

Therefore, refuting the people of innovation, warning against them and refuting their doubts is all from removing that which is harmful from the path; and it is considered to be from Īmān (faith).

Benefit: Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah on Reading the Books of the Innovators

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Our brother Mūsá Richardson, whilst reading through the book entitled, "Methods the People of Falsehood Use to Establish Their Baatil - Exposed" by Shaykh Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar Bazmūl, may Allāh preserve him, mentioned a very important issue concerning reading the books of the innovators.  Many of us have heard the erroneous statement, "take the good and leave the bad", which in essence does not make any sense at all in this situation. This act of taking the good and leaving the bad would require a person, in advance, to have knowledge of the good and the bad to be able to filter out what would harm him.  If he had this ability he wouldn't need this source at all in the first place.

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymīyyah, may Allāh have mercy on him, commented on one of the most famous explanations of the Qurʾān from the Muʿtazilah entitled, "al-Kashaaf". This tafsīr has been read by many, both in the past and the present who fell for the high level of eloquence and literature in this book. Similarly, today we find many reading and quoting from the deviant Sayyid Qutb and his misguided tafsīr, "In the Shade of the Qurʾān" (Fī Zilal al-Qurʾān).  Again, people are not basing this on its concurrence to the sunnah, but rather they are attached to the eloquence exhibited by the author.

Listen to see what Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymīyyah had to say about this book (al-Kashaaf) and those who read it - An Important Principle to Understand!

Shaykh Rabīʿ on Shaykh Aḥmad Bazmūl's Warning Against ʿAlī Ḥasan al-Ḥalabī's New Book (below):

All praises be to Allāh, and peace and blessings of Allāh be upon the Messenger of Allāh, and upon his family, his companions and those who have aided him.

To Proceed:

Glad tidings to all the Salafīs everywhere upon the happy news, which indeed is the praise of our Shaykh, the flag-bearer of Jarh and Ta'deel (The science of criticizing and praising), Rabīʿ bin Hādī al-Madkhalī, may Allāh preserve him (from all harm), for the book "A Warning to the Prudent Ones from the Flimsiness of the reasoning of ʿAlī al-Ḥalabī, the Miskīn" which has been written by Shaykh Abī ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Sa'ad bin Fathee bin Saʿīd az-Za'taree.

So, I asked (Rabīʿ bin Hādī al-Madkhalī), may Allāh preserve him, his opinion about the book?

So he (Rabīʿ bin Hādī al-Madkhalī ), may Allāh preserve him, said:

"I have read the book in its entirety, and the writer has done very well. And al-Ḥalabī has been subdued over (his explanation) of many of different issues, and has been made to face the correct stance. And it is indeed a strong knowledge-based refutation, maa shaa Allāh ta'aʿalá, may Allāh reward the writer the best of rewards."

I have written this on: 15/01/1430AH (12/01/2009)

Shaykh ’Ubayd al-Jābirī on Tarāwīḥ Prayers In the Mosques of the People of Innovation

Questioner: O Shaykh, in the month of Ramaḍān, some of the Salafīs leave off the Taraaweeh prayers in the masājid of the Salafīs and go to the masājid of other than them because of the beautiful recitations of their Imāms, so is this [action of theirs] permissible?

Shaykh ’Ubayd: In reality this question is strange, and that is because some of the Salafīs leave off the Taraaweeh prayer of Ramaḍān with their brothers from the Salafīs and go to pray it with the people of innovation due to their beautiful voices…”

Questioner: Shaykh, the question does not say ‘the people of innovation,’ rather it merely says ‘other than them’ (i.e. other than the Salafīs).

Shaykh ’Ubayd: Other than them, meaning the people of innovation, because if the word ‘other’ is used as the opposite of the Salafī, it means the person of innovation. As for the answer to this question, I advise these youth from the Salafīs to pray with their brothers from the Salafīs and not to go to the people of innovation, because this will increase their numbers and strengthen them against the people of the sunnah. That is one point; another point is that following after the beautiful voices of those who recite and bouncing from one reciter to another, because of a beautiful voice, is from the affairs of fitnah as has been related from Imām Aḥmad (d.241H) and others, may Allāh have mercy upon them.1

Benefit: The Ruling on Commemorative Gatherings for the Deceased

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Shaykh ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAbdullāh ibn Bāz was asked: There are some customs in Yemen that people do after the death of a family member in which the relatives are forced to go into debt to pay for a commemorative gathering, and food and drink that is served there and similar things, even in the case of a very poor person who died and did not leave behind any inheritance, so what is the ruling concerning this gathering?

Answer: It is not allowed for the family of the deceased person to establish such commemorative gatherings nor may they slaughter animals and prepare food for the people; all of these things are innovations, and they are from the actions and ways of the people of jāhilīyyah, and it is obligated to abandon these things. What is legislated is that they supplicate for them and it is legislated for the close family and neighbours to prepare food for them as they have become occupied with the trial which they have been afflicted with. Benefit: The Story of the Man Who Attended the Janāzah of Bishr al-Marīsī

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

When Bishr ibn Ghiyāth al-Marīsī died, not a single person from the people of knowledge and Sunnah attended his janāzah except for ʿUbayd al-Shūnīzī. So when he returned from the janāzah of al-Marīsī, Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamāʿah confronted him.

They said: O enemy of Allāh! You claim to be upon the Sunnah and the Jamāʾah but you attend the janāzah of al-Marīsī?

He replied: Allow me respite until I inform you! I have never attended a janāzah in which I hoped for [so much] reward as this janāzah. When he [Bishr al-Marīsī] was placed in the designated place for the janāzah, I stood up in the row and said:

O Allāh! This slave of yours used to disbelieve in [the believers] seeing you in the hereafter. O Allāh, blind him from seeing your face on the day the believers will see you.
O Allāh! This slave of yours used to disbelieve in the punishments of the grave. O Allāh, punish him this day—in his grave—with a punishment you have never punished anyone from the creation with.
O Allāh! This slave of yours used to disbelieve in the mīzān [scale]. O Allāh, lighten his scale on the Day of Judgement.
O Allāh! This slave of yours used to disbelieve in al-shafāʿah [intercession], O Allāh, let not anyone from your creation intercede for him on the Day of Judgement.

So upon hearing this, they [Ahl al-Sunnah] remained silent [i.e. they let him be] and laughed.

The Shaykh (حفظه الله) stated: "This is because their views and opinions are contradictory to Salafīyyah. Salafīyyah not only clarifies their contradictions but also deems them to be innovators. This is what is meant [by the Prophet (ﷺ) when he said:] 'All of them [i.e the groups] are in the Fire, except one.' It was said: 'Which group, O Messenger of Allāh?' Benefit: Yusuf al-Qaraḍawi's Statement about the Israeli Election: A Matter of Context?

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Is the Context Relevant When One Demeans Allāh?

During the 2011 lecture at York Univeristy entitled "Islām in Our Times," [then entire set is entitled Selected Points of Benefit from Sharḥ al-Sunnah] a questioner asks for advice on how to handle the feuding that occurs between masjids…where many of the people are caught up in the middle, a beneficial question seeking clarification about unity. Our beloved elder Dāwūd Adīb elaborates on what Islamic unity really is.

After this, a questioner asks for the URL (audio link) to Yusuf al-Qaradawi's infamous statement about the Israeli elections wherein he made the despicable statement, "If Allāh had presented himself to the people as a candidate he would not have been able to take this amount." A vile statement about Allāh, the Sublime, the Almighty. This clip serves to:

a) play the actual audio of Yusuf al-Qaradawi saying this statement (so there is no doubt about it being from him)
b) discuss the issue of "intention" or "intended meaning" or "context" and its relevance to such a lowly statement about Allāh
c) discuss the rulings of some of the major scholars on Qaradawi's statement and the obligation of him making tawbah

Recently, in order to distract some innocent Muslims from the evils of this statement and the serious errors of Qaradawi in general, some have taken to accusing Muslim speakers in the West of making takfīr of Qaradawi. Perhaps this has been done to draw attention away from Qaradawi's horrendous proclamation about Allāh and instead to gain sympathy for him. Some of the Major Scholars such as Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-ʿUthaymīn and Shaykh Muqbil ibn Hādī al-Wādiʿī (rahimahumullāh) stated that Qaradawi must make tawbah from this statement as it is a statement of kufr. This in turn has been relayed by many speakers in the West including Dāwūd Adīb and Abū Khadījah in lectures, quoting these two illustrious scholars and others. This has created a smokescreen of supposed injustice and extremism (by way of alleged takfīr from Western duʿāt who were merely narrating rulings of the scholars), thus deflecting attention away from Qaradawi and his serious errors.

Here are the statements of the two illustrious scholars:

Stated Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn after these words (of Qaradawi) were played to him, "I seek refuge in Allāh. It is obligatory for this person to repent. And if he does not he should be killed as an apostate, since he made the creation more knowledgeable than the Creator. It is upon him to repent to Allāh, so if he repents, then Allāh forgives the sins of His servants. And if not then the Wullāt ul-Amr should strike his neck (with the sword)." (Cassette Recording, quoted in Silencing the Hounding Dog, p.119).…

Stated Shaykh Muqbil ibn Hādī, "On this day I was informed by the brother, Ṣāliḥ al-Bakri that he heard some words of (al-Qaradawi) in a cassette that he says that this Jew (i.e. the Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu) was victorious by 99% of votes and that Allāh cannot even achieve this, even if the people voted for Allāh, He would not be able to acquire 99% of the votes. These words are clear and manifest misguidance. If he wished to make a Jew superior to Allāh, free is He from imperfection, the Most High, then he is a disbeliever (i.e. apostate). And if he intended that the Jews and Christians and the worshippers of the cow and chickens and others are very many in number yet they do not vote for Allāh, then this is another matter. However it is still clear misguidance (on al-Qaradawi's behalf). For verily, our Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, is not in need of voting, for He, free is He of all imperfection, is the one who says "Be" to something and it is. He is the one who destroyed Fir'aun, and He destroyed Qārun, and He destroyed many nations, from amongst those who exceeded beyond bounds and who stood in the faces of the Prophets of Allāh, the Mighty and Majestic. So he aided the Prophets and gave them victory, in this life and the next. Voting is only needed by a weak man, O Pauper!… Have you disbelieved O Qaradawi or have you brought yourself nearer?…..." (Silencing the Hounding Dog, pp.110-112).
