And Whoever Does Not Rule by What Allāh Revealed...

  Abū Khadījah ʿAbd al-Wāḥid

"There will be leaders who will not be led by my guidance and who will not adopt my ways? There will be among them men who will have the hearts of devils in the bodies of human beings. I said: What should I do Messenger of Allāh, if I (happen) to live in that time? He replied: You will listen to the ameer and carry out his orders; even if your back is flogged and your wealth is snatched, you should listen and obey."

Benefit: A Valuable Lesson from the Life of Ibn Taymiyyah and His Student

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Shaykh Rabīʿ ibn Hādī al-Madkhalī (حفظه الله) said: “Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمهما الله) lived in a country ruled by kings, and although the country was deviant in its belief, worship, and laws, they never attacked its rulers with their swords; rather, they fought the Mongols under their country's banner.”

Benefit: Fighting against the Khawārij Is Rewarded!

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Question: What is the meaning behind—the authentically agreed upon narration from the Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم)—when he said: There will arise near the end of time a people who are young in age with foolish, deficient intellects, they will speak with the speech of the best of creations, their īmān (faith) will not go beyond their throats, they will leave Islām just as the arrow goes through its game. So wherever you find them, fight them, for verily there will be a reward on the day of Judgment for the ones who fight them.

About whom was this narration mentioned about? And which time frame was the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) indicating?

Answer: This narration and that which is in it was said by the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) about a sect who are called 'al-Khawārij' due to their extremism in the religion and their expelling of Muslims (from Islām) because of sins which do not take someone out of Islām. They also rebelled against ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (may Allāh be pleased with him) and they refuted him on particular issues, so he (ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib) called them to the truth and debated them. Many of them returned to the truth and some of them remained (upon their false ideology). So when the aggression against the Muslims past its limit, ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (may Allāh be pleased with him) fought them and the Muslim leaders who came after him fought them as well, in accordance with the narration mentioned (in the question) and its meaning. There are remnants (of the Khawārij) till this very day, and the ruling upon them is general to everyone who holds their (Khārijī) beliefs in every time and place.

Translator's note: Without a doubt, a crucial method of fighting against the Khawārij (terrorist, renegades) is by speaking and writing against them at any and every given moment of opportunity, as our Scholars and their scholars and so on have been doing for centuries. There are many ways you could help your community, by collaborating with them in handing out material on the subject matter of terrorism and its ill effects or simply by guiding them to those who may help in educating them about the true Islamic beliefs with regards to the khawārij.

Al-Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyād stated: By Allāh, you are not permitted to inflict harm on a dog or a pig without just cause. How could you then harm a Muslim?1

Benefit: O Muslims - Don't Sympathise with the Khawārij!

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

In a return visit to Toronto during the Fall of 2014, our noble brother Abū al-ʿAbbās Mūsá Richardson delivered an excellent khuṭbah in which he warned the Muslims from  the emotion-based recruiting tactics of ISIS, the false claimants to an "Islamic State" and leadership over the Muslims. He explained that they are Khawārij  (renegades) those who the Prophet Muḥammad (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhī wa-sallam) labelled "dogs of the hellfire". Our beloved brother stressed the fact that it is not permissible to feel sympathy for them in any way as they are the helpers of Shaytān and do not represent Islām in any fashion whatsoever.

Benefit: Shaykh ʿAbd al-Muhsin al-ʿAbbād on the Killing of Bin Laden al-Khārijī

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Shaykh ʿAbd al-Muhsin al-ʿAbbād was asked about the killing of the Kharijite ibn Laden 28/5/1432

السؤال: ما هو القول الوسط في مقتل أسامة بن لادن فهناك من فرح بمقتله, وهناك من قال إنه كان مجاهداً وحكم له بالشهادة؟

[Q]: What is the balanced position concerning the killing of Usamah ibn Laden as there were those who are delighted with his killing and others who said that he was a Mujāhid and they judged him to have achieved martyrdom?

[A]: "How is he a Mujāhid! Yes, he was a Mujāhid in the path of the devil. Usamah ibn Laden brought a great deal of evil to the Muslims, and there is no doubt that his departure will bring them ease; the people will be more at ease due to his departure."1

Benefit: So, You're Impressed by the Lunacy of Jihadist Beheadings?

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

In a sidebar benefit recorded in Masjid Raḥmah (approx. 2002), during a series of classes on al-ʿAqīdah al-Wāsitiyyah, our beloved brother Abu ʿUways (raḥimahullāh) addresses some foolish individuals who were amused upon hearing about the khawārij beheading a non-Muslim in Saudi al-ʿArabīa who was under the protection of the Kingdom. Abū 'Uways (رحمه الله), refutes the takfīrī ideology and goes on to discuss that our ummah is not a nation of unjust killings; it is a nation of mercy. Our beloved Messenger (ﷺ), taught us not to harm an animal unjustly, let alone a human being.

Narrated by Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنه): "The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'A woman entered the Fire because of a cat which she had tied, neither giving it food nor setting it free to eat from the vermin of the earth.'" (Reported Ṣaḥiḥ Bukhārī, Vol. 4, Book 54, No. 535.)

Narrated by Abū Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه): "The Messenger (ﷺ) said, 'A prostitute was forgiven by Allāh, because while passing by a panting dog near a well she saw that the dog was about to die of thirst, so she took off her shoe, and tying it with her head-cover, she drew out some water for it. So, Allāh forgave her because of that.'" (Reported in Ṣaḥiḥ Bukhārī, Vol. 4, Book 54, No. 538.)

Narrated by 'Abdullāh ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنه): "The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'Whoever killed a Mu'ahid [a person who is granted the pledge of protection by the Muslims] shall not smell the fragrance of paradise though its fragrance can be smelt at a distance of forty years [of traveling].'" (Reported in Ṣaḥiḥ Bukhārī, Vol. 9, Book 83, No. 49.)

Indeed, we do not rejoice in the unjust killings of Muslims or non-Muslims, this is not victory. Victory lies in applying the Qur'an and Sunnah upon the understanding of the Salaf us-Sālih.

Benefit: Take Heed Khārijīs (Dogs of the Hell Fire), Before the Hour Is Established!

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

The Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) has prophesied the coming of the many groups.  Some, as he has foretold, will not be from the drinkers of the ḥawḍ', some he gave the title, 'fire worshippers of this nation',1 a specific group was titled, "Dogs of the Hell-Fire" (the Khawārij), etc..

These "dogs" are the same individuals that killed many of the companions, including ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, radhiyallahu 'ʿʿanhu.  In more recent times, there has been much media attention placed on these individuals. Days before the Fort Hūd shooting, this website spread the refutations against the misguided Anwar al-Awlaki.  The corrupted incident took place on November 5th, and Anwar was quick to praise such devilish actions.

See the entire forum thread here (includes the audio recording with Shaykh ʿUbayd).

Our dear brother Mūsá Richardson sheds some light2 on this issue of kharūj, the call to rebel against the Muslim leaders, and brings forth statements from the earlier scholars on the impermissibility of this act. The second item to be viewed below  is by Abū Khadījah.3 The well-respected brother brings some stories from how the salaf, our predecessors, dealt with these individuals.

*Note: It should be known that it is not permissible for us to kill the Khawārij ourselves.  The noble scholar, Shaykh Rabīʿ Ibn Hādī  was asked: Is it permissible for us to kill the Khawārij if we know them and know their wickedness?  He responded by saying: No, if they rebel against the Imām. ʿAlī (raḍī Allāhu ʿʿʿanhu), did not kill them up until they rebelled. The Muslim rulers, even if they are oppressive, (they) do not kill them (khawārij) up until they draw their swords and rebel (against them), that is if they unsheathe their swords and rebel and kill. If not, then there will be chaos, each one will go and kill the other claiming he is khārijī.

Benefit: The Blessing of Being Saved from the Ideology of the Khawārij (Renegade Terrorists)

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

On the authority of Abū al-ʿĀliyah al-Riyāhī (may Allāh have mercy upon him) who mentioned: "Verily I have been granted two blessings, I don’t know which of the two is greater, that Allāh has guided me to Islām and that he has not made me from the Ḥurūriyyah (Khawārij)" (Muṣnaf ʿAbd al-Razāq al-Ṣanʿānī, #18667).

Shaykh ʿAbd al-Razāq al-Badr: "That which is incumbent upon everyone—who Allāh has saved from the ideology of the Khawārij—is that they praise and thank Allāh for this great blessing. Especially when you see their great crimes, in the past and in the present, of ex-communicating and spilling the blood of the Muslims."

Benefit: The Evils of the Khawārij, Past and Present

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

The Khawārij is a group that has strayed from the correct understanding of Islām and in doing so, has created a great deal of mischief in the lands of the Muslims. The sect's fundamental deviations in matters of Islamic creed (such as obeying the ruler) have led to much bloodshed and turmoil. Therefore, it is imperative for the Muslim to understand the reality of this group and their dangers. In this benefit, our brother Abū al-Ḥasan Mālik makes mention of a few narrations regarding the corrupt and misguided ideology of the Khawārij. He concludes by referring us to the correct path to salvation. Take a listen, may Allāh reward you, and share this clip with your family and friends. Benefit: The Khawārij Cause Corruption and Destruction Wherever They Go

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Shaykh Muḥammad Ghālib al-‘Umarī (حفظه الله) said on the 12th January 2017: “From the dawn of its existence, the Khawārij has only succeeded in enraging the Ummah because of their revolutions and upheavals, destruction, spilling of blood, and taking people out of the fold of Islām. They are the source of destruction and the reason for corruption wherever they settle.”

Benefit: The Khawārij of Today Have No Patience for Ṭūllāb al-ʿIlm

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

After advising us not to abandon lessons after attending the first few, our teacher, Ustādh Mūsá Richardson, may Allāh have abundant mercy upon him, stated the following:1

... An additional benefit that is related to our  Salafīyyah  and our distinction from the Khawārij  of today: There is a special attribute that the Khawārij have today, specifically. The Khawārij who call to rebel against the rulers. You might say: "This is a strange connection." But I will tell you: The  Khawārij of today have no patience in Ṭālib al-ʿIlm. They have no patience to continue [upon it] and study day-after-day, week-after-week, and year-after-year. While they may have acts of worship which are great and other things that they perform with diligence, Ṭālib al-ʿIlm is very hard for them in this era. Why? I do not know. Why do I say that? It manifests itself in their claim when they speak about the scholars of  Ahl al-Sunnah. [From] the evil nicknames that the Khawārij invent for our scholars today are: They are the scholars of woman's underpants (i.e. menses, the colour of the blood, when it is pure and impure).

What is the secret behind this claim, aside them being  khabīth and having filthy accusations? Why do they pick this issue out of all of the issues in the religion, saying that the scholars are busy with this? They could say that the ʿulāma are busy with sheep and cows, dividing them up for Zakāh. They could say that they ʿulāma are busy with raising your hands or not raising your hands in takbīr. If they wanted to speak about the ʿulāma, they could say so many things.

Why did they say that the scholars are people who are so busy with issues of women's purity? This is because they attended the first few lessons with the scholars. They tried to seek knowledge. They tried. But they did not get past ṭahārah (purification)! So, in their minds, the ʿulāma are still teaching menses after 25-30 years. They came to a few lessons and saw the ʿulāma of  Islām  dealing with the texts of the Book and the Sunnah  in great detail and precision, making taḥqīq, and showing how the issues about ṭahārah are to be understood properly - and one of the issues [were] women's menses. This is an issue from our  dīn. So, when they couldn't bear it and they did not have patience to go beyond that and gain real fiqh in the religion, they immediately jumped to the newspapers, seeking Fiqh al-Wāqiʿ, and running to the political activities, propped up as scholars, and getting behind them, trying to replace our scholars with those political activities. What made them make this jump? What made them leave the lessons with the ʿulāma in the very beginning? It is their lack of patience. So be a Salafī. Be distinguished. Be patient upon Ṭālib al-ʿIlm. It takes patience for you to study a book from beginning to end.

From the words of Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān: This is the path to understanding your religion. This is the path to being firm in your ʿAqīdah and being rightly guided as the Companions were rightly guided. This is the path to salvation.

So be patient and ask Allāh for  consistency, patience, and persistence  upon this good you are on right now.1

Benefit: The Khawārij Will Arise from ʿIrāq

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

On the authority of Yusayr ibn ʿAmr who said: I asked Sahl ibn Ḥanīf: Have you heard the prophet (ṣalla Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say anything about the Khawārij (renegade terrorists)? He said: I heard him say—while pointing towards the direction of ʿIrāq—there will arise from it a people who recite the Qurʾān whilst it does not go beyond their throats. They will exit the religion like the arrow exits the game’s body.

Benefit: The Objective to Water Down the Salafī Daʿwah to Facilitate Ahl al-Bidʿah

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

I say: There has come about in this time of ours, he who thinks that he is upon the methodology of the Salaf while in fact he is not. Rather, there is he who applies the name ‘al-Salafīyyah’ to the modern partisan groups of which some of them are upon the ideology of the Khawārij and think that the common denominator between them is al-Salafīyyah. This is as a result of an abundance of ignorance and the scarcity of knowledge, as Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymīyyah has said. Or it is that the objective is to water down the Da’watus-Salafīyyah which is predicated upon the Book and the authentic Sunnah, with the understanding of the Salafus-Ṣāliḥ so (as to facilitate) the entrance of the deviant groups into the realm of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jamāʿah.1

Benefit: What Do We Say About ISIS?

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Ḥasan al-Sumālī discuses ISIS, the false-claimants to an "Islamic State" and leadership over the Muslims. He explains that they are  Khawārij (renegades). They are those who the Prophet Muḥammad (sallallāhu ʿalayhī wa-sallam) labelled "dogs of the hellfire." The speaker continues: it is not permissible to feel sympathy for them...these individuals have ruined the image of Islām more than anyone with millions of dollars could have achieved, through their filthy and barbaric actions. Finally the speaker highlights that ISIS (and those like them) are bringing their fight not soley to the West but their major concern is to fight and overthrow Muslim rulership in the Muslim lands as evident through their countless murders of Muslims in Iraq and Syria. Their claim is Islām but their actions are those of violent political revolutionaries. he finishes by mentioning numerous names of the Salafī scholars who have academically annihilated ISIS, al-Qaida, Usamah bin Laden etc.

  Abū ʿIyāḍ Amjad Rafīq

The exceptional book "Sharḥ al-Uṣūl al-Sittah" [شرح الأصول الستة] is a short treatise outlining six great and mighty principles of the dīn of Islām through which the errors of extremists of all kinds are made plain. These six principles comprise: a) sincerity in worship, b) obligation of unity, c) giving obedience to those in authority, d) knowledge of the true scholars of the religion, e) knowledge of the true awliyaa (friends) of Allāh and f)  recognizing and repelling a doubt related to a person's ability in following the Book and the Sunnnah.
