A Noble Advice Concerning Clinging to the Manhaj of the Salaf

  al-ʿAllāmah Rabīʿ ibn Hādī al-Madkhalī

A short admonition on the importance of clinging to the correct manhaj. An exemplification of why this noble Salafī manhaj is the only way which will bring rectification and success to the ummah. The questions which follow underline the evils of Abū al-Fitan (al-Maʿribī) and his similitude to the methodology of Sayyid Qutb, the destruction of the manhaj of al-muwāzināt (counterbalancing the good and bad points of a person) and the mistake of carrying the mujmal upon the mufaṣṣal (the general over the specific), destruction upon the manhaj of salaf.

A Return to Excellence

How can the Muslims return to the excellence and virtue (fadl) which the Salaf al-Ṣāliḥ (Righteous Predecessors) had gained.

Guard Yourselves From the Two Extremes

During the seminar, Bulūgh al-Marām: Chapter of Purification in January 2017, our noble and respected Shaykh, Shaykh Ḥasan ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Banná delivered a very important lecture concerning the importance of clinging to the Qurʾān and the Sunnah and the methodology of the Salaf, and the importance of staying away from the two extremes of exaggeration and falling short. Instead, one should maintain a balanced path of understanding, which can only be attained through seeking knowledge.

The Danger of Those Who Sport the Garments of Ahl Sunnah Only to Lead the Salafīs Astray

A lecture from the 2008 Toronto leg of the Holding on to Islām seminar. The one who destroys your house from the inside is worse and more dangerous than the one who tries to destroy your house from the outside; the same is true for the people of bidʿah who claim to be Salafī, who quote from some of the Salafī scholars etc., yet their aim is to destroy our ʿaqīḍah and our manhaj, leading us into the Fire. How should the Salafīs deal with these people? This lecture incorporates the works of Shaykh Rabīʿ ibn Hādī al-Madhkhālī, and other Salafī scholars of today. Ustadh Abū Khadījah also takes examples from the lives of the Ṣaḥābah and the scholars of the past.

During the Seminar, Bulūgh al-Marām: Chapter of Purification in January 2017, our noble and respected elder, Abū Muʿādh Taqwīm Aslam, delivered a powerful khuṭbah concerning the blessings of Allāh, all of which we could never even begin to enumerate, and the greatest of which is guidance to Islam and the Sunnah. In this khuṭbah, he also highlighted the grave importance of seeking and equipping oneself with knowledge in order to worship Allāh as He has commanded us, so we may protect ourselves and our families from a fire whose fuel is men and stones.

Q&A with Shaykh Ḥasan ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Banná: Egyptian Treasures in Refutation of Doubtful Manhaj Trolls

Doubt #1: "All you people (Salafis) know is manhaj, you just study Sharḥ al-Sunnah, you don't know the important matters"

On the evening of Saturday, November 12th, 2017 (Safar, 23rd, 1439), our noble brother Shākir al-Afghānī had the pleasure of an audience with Shaykh Ḥasan ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Banná. After greeting the Shaykh and informing him of the activities at TROID in Toronto, Canada, and exchanging pleasantries, he mentioned the following doubts that are spread nowadays in order to split the ranks of the Salafīs (i.e. in Canada, USA, UK etc.).

Questioner: Shaykh, our brothers are seeking advice regarding some of the Canadian youth who return from Medīnah [i.e. The Islamic University] with doubts. They spread these doubts amongst the Salafis and slander the brothers. They claim that the brothers do not know anything except Manhaj. Likewise, they belittle the books of Manhaj, the like of: Sharḥ al-Sunnah. They claim the brothers do not know Tawḥīd, Fiqh and the rulings of Wuḍūʿ, and that they do not know of the important matters.

Shaykh:...these are students who go from Canada to study in the Islāmic university, and return with this speech?

Questioner: Yes Shaykh. How do you advise us to deal with them.

Shaykh: In the name of Allāh, all praise is due to Allāh, and may the peace and blessings of Allāh be upon the Messenger of Allāh, ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam.

Our noble brother has asked a question on behalf of our Salafī brothers in Canada regarding some of the students who go to the Islamic University and return with speech which is contradictory to the speech of the people of Sunnah. They belittle the books of Ahl al-Sunnah and speak ill of the duʿāt of Ahl al-Sunnah. What should our position be regarding this and how should we deal with them.

I say—by the favor of Allāh—they should be advised. If they are not with the Salafis in knowledge and in action, they are to be disassociated from, abandoned, and no one should speak to them [i.e. with regards to the religion].

Likewise, I advise our Salafī brothers not to engage these people in debates nor speak to them with regards to the religion because they hold opinions which are in opposition to that which the people of Sunnah are upon, based on that which you have mentioned.

So abandon them, do not speak to them! Tell them, “you are upon your path and we are upon our path, do not bother us and do not cause us fitnah”. Do not let them speak, and do not let them in your mosques, because they may propagate their bidʿah. So prohibit them from this in a good way without harm. This is the way it should be done.

If they enter your ranks, they will cause fitnah for the youth, so beware of them. Leave them in their state and remain you in your state. Leave them to their mosques and leave us to our mosques. This is the correct way.

And may the peace and blessings of Allāh be upon the Messenger (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam).

Questioner: Jazākum Allāhu Khayrā

Benefit: “An Attribute I Have Known From Akhzam” The Inheritance of the Ḥizbīs

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

The phrase "An attribute I have known from Akhzam" is an old Arab proverb which is based on a true story of a man named Akhzam who was disobedient and rebellious to his father. Later when Akhzam passed away, his children increased in harshness and disobedience to their grandfather, surpassing Akhzam himself. Until one day they beat their own grandfather, the grandfather then replied by saying:

إنَّ بَنِيَّ ضَرَّجُونِي بالدَّمِ *** شِنْشِنَةٌ أَعْرِفُهَا مِن أَخْزَمِ
Indeed My Children Have Imbrued me (with my own) Blood. An Attribute I Have Known From Akhzam.

Meaning, that which they were doing was not something new for the grandfather, rather it was an attribute inherited from the deceased Akhzam.

The Scholars use this famous proverb to illustrate to us that the Ḥizbīs have not brought something new with them, rather speaking ill of the Salafis is something the people of innovation and Ḥizbiyyah of old would practice.

Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī mentioned: A sign of the people of innovation is their battling against the people of narrations (Ahl al-Athar). [ʿAqīdah al-Salaf wa Asḥāb al-Ḥadīth, pg.304]

Benefit: Answering the Doubt — Look Who Got "Dropped" Now

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Ustādh Abū Idrīs answers a doubt planted to imply harshness and lack of justice amongst the Salafis. The lecturer explains firstly that the true scales of justice in judging any person and his affairs is the Book and the Sunnah, not the desires of man. Secondly, it is well known in the Sunnah the ḥadīth explaining that a man will do the deeds of the people of paradise up until he is an arm's span from paradise only to turn away from it (and what is written for him overcomes him). To turn a blind eye to fitnah, to ignore the reality that people will go astray, is to trivialise the reality of this world, in this case, with a slanted agenda. The speaker reminds, if the companions did not feel safe from misguidance, then who are we? He concludes the benefit by incurring the listeners to make duʿāʾ and to strive upon the Salafī methodology, understanding that who is upon the truth and who is upon falsehood is a criterion built upon proofs, evidences and justice (not something to be mocked or trivialised).

The benefit is excerpted from the 2018 Summer Seminar: The Methodology of the Salaf in Times of Fitnah.

Benefit: As for You, O Poor Small Student Who Is Weak in Knowledge, Do Not Debate!

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Shaykh Rabīʿ ibn Hādī al-Madkhalī (ḥafiẓahullāh):

The statement of al-Imām Aḥmad about al-Qadar,

"Not to debate or argue with anyone, and not to learn argumentation."

There are from amongst the small students of knowledge, who go and debate with the Rāfiḍah, the Jahmīyyah, and the Muʿtazilah concerning the divine decree, debating with them in these affairs. Do not subject yourself to doubts (for indeed they lead you to being) astray. However, the skillful scholar, who knows that he will be able to benefit with such debates, either aiding the Sunnah or subduing the people of falsehood, or even maybe Allāh will guide the one whom the scholar is debating. If he is seeking the truth, then the scholar is to clarify the issue to him.

As for you, the poor small student who is weak in knowledge, do not debate! I emphasise this point to the students of knowledge that you should not debate concerning the likes of these very serious innovations. As for the normal affairs that you know, and they are in the limits of your abilities, and you fully understand them, then there is no problem for you to discuss them, as long as the intention is not to debate and gain victory, but rather the goal is for clarification.1

Benefit: Concerning Bashing Imām al-Barbahārī’s Book (Sharḥ al-Sunnah)

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

The following questions were directed to Shaykh Muḥammad ʿAlī Farkūs (حفظه الله): “What is your opinion about al-Barbahārī’s book Sharḥ al-Sunnah and the one who defames it?”

He (حفظه الله) stated:1

Al-Barbahārī—who died 329 years after the Hijrah—is Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥasan ibn ‘Alī ibn Khalaf, and he was the shaykh of the Ḥanbalī scholars in Iraq in his time. He was a muḥaddith [i.e. a scholar of Ḥadīth], a ḥāfiẓ [i.e. a great memoriser], and a faqīh [i.e. a scholar of fiqh], and Sharḥ al-Sunnah—in which he established the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-al-Jamāʿah in issues such as Allāh’s Names and Attributes and the [various] issues of īmān—is from his books.

Only a person of desires and innovation who is prejudiced towards Ahl al-Sunnah wa-al-Jamāʿah will defame their creed and methodology as “criticising the people who cling to the narrations is from the signs of the people of innovation.”2 This only originates from an ignorant or a stubborn person who is vindictive.

Consequently, manifesting the Sunnah, acquainting the Muslims with it, and suppressing innovations utilising the principles the Sharīʿah mandated is obligatory.

A Muslim should [always] avoid becoming preoccupied with trivial matters and those who engage in them so as to avoid stooping to their level. He should [always] attempt to recognise the things that are of greater importance—which will enable him to attain religious honour—and to avoid the things that will cause him humiliation and dishonour,

وَلِلَّـهِ الْعِزَّةُ وَلِرَ‌سُولِهِ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
“And honour belongs to Allāh, His Messenger (ﷺ), and to the believers.”
[Sūrah al-Munāfiqūn, 63:8].

Benefit: Concerning the Doubt - "It's Just Translations and Translators"

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

On the 24th of Jumādá al-Awwal, 1439 (2018/02/09), we asked the noble shaykh and scholar, Ḥasan ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Banná the following questions, after updating him on the progress of the Qawāʾid al-Arbaʿ class at TROID:

[Q]: Shaykh, what should we advise those who whisper and cast doubts about the weekly classes [at TROID and in the West at large] saying, “why should we attend these classes when we can simply read the book ourselves [i.e. it's just translation]?”

[A]: This is the way of Ahl al-Sunnah, they do not teach from their own opinions, rather they read from the works of the scholars and from their explanations, like we did, as you witnessed when you were here with us [studying] in Egypt. Pay no attention to them. Continue in your way that you are upon now, teach the people and do not pay attention to them.

[Q]: Shaykh, there is a doubt going around regarding the students in the West being mere translators (مترجمون) and not students of knowledge.

[A]: So you are telling me they have been translating for the scholars for over 20 years and they learnt nothing in this time? This is nonsense. They [who say this] need to fear Allāh.

Benefit: Concerning Those Who Try to Break Up the Community

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Benefit: Concerning Those Who Try to Break Up the Community - Creating Rival Centres/Platforms in the name of Salafiyyah?

The late Abū ʿUways (raḥimahullāh), in approximately 2003, discusses those who speak against their local salafī masjid/centre. A phenomenon that happens nowadays also, wherein a person speaks ill of the salafī masjid/centre, then throws his/her arms up in protest when people (rightfully) place a question mark over his/her head. The objective of him/her speaking ill of their Salafī masjid/centre is to cast doubts and carve out legitimacy for a rival organisation, with of course, they, the rabble-rousers, as custodians of this rival organisation.  He states:

"If a brother calls for something, that is in opposition to the Sunnah, for instance he says: 'leave Masjid Raḥmah, go somewhere else...', then OF COURSE HE SHOULD BE WARNED AGAINST. He is calling to separation, calling the people away from the asl, which is to gather (unite) upon the haqq. OF COURSE HE SHOULD BE WARNED AGAINST. What is he calling to? (He's) calling to separation. We don't take it as seriously as we should take it, because we have never understood the fruits and benefits of unity, and how precious unity is. Unity is expensive (and precious), we don't understand that yet, or very few of us do, so every little mishap, 'Oh, i'm going my way, let me get my bat and ball and play with somebody else', this type of mentality, this type of childish, infantile mentality. Rather than maintain your unity with your brother, to stay and deal with the harms (a person's imperfections), he might say a loose word, he might treat you a little rough, but you hang in there because you understand the importance of unity, and you're Ahl al-Sunnah wa-al-Jamāʿah, those who stick to the Sunnah and gather and unite upon it. When they (those who jump to separate) understand this asl (foundation), then we will see a lot of improvement, right now, many of our salafī brothers are going through what the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said..."Shaytān has given up any hope of ever being worshipped in the Arabian peninsula, but he seeks to make confusion and differences between you". This is what the game is now. Create confusion and differences. Make them (the people) differ, make them fall out (with one another). Make it where they can't have any unity. Make them fight one another. Make them hate one another. Make them turn back from one another. After Allāh (subḥanahu wa-taʿālá), our greatest strength is unity, and we're going to lose it? It is almost like they are (rogue)...a group of guys who infiltrate, and their whole thing is to mess up everything, from the inside out. It's ridiculous, fights flowing, everyone going majnūn (crazy)...the old rule, divide and conquer seems to still be amongst us!

This advice is more than a decade old and serves to remind us of two important points:

1) For the person who takes the position, "I don't like fitnah and I stay away from controversy", then inevitably, he/she will fall right into it. The reason being that a) you don't know the haqq from the bāṭil b) you don't have enough ghīrah for the people of Sunnah. Decades ago, people used to say this and when the fitnah of QSS/Maʿrabī/Ḥalabī arose, they fell right into it because they "don't like fitnah..." Now, decades on, they followed QSS to the Abū Hurayrah Centre and right into the denizens of al-Maghrib institute, far, far away from Salafiyyah. If you ask them today, they'll still tell you, "We're staying away from the fitnah".

2) These doubts and trials that Abū ʿUways spoke about are a generation ago. These same types of doubts and same times of fitnah occur today. The only difference is that inventing a platform to separate is accelerated by creating multiple twitter accounts (and following literally everyone) and flooding social media with memes, youtube videos etc. to look flashy and viable. The point is that the tools change, the objectives remain the same. Raise doubts - invent an alternative - call to separation (of course all in the name of unity and daʿwah). Such was done by madeenah.con (FOL), QSS before them etc. etc.

The bottom line is: Stick closely to the jamāʿah, look to people who try to discourage this with contempt, they are not deserving of your ear or your trust, admonish them to fear Allāh. May Allāh grant you and us safety upon the Sunnah!
