Benefit: Defending The Daʿwah Requires Thick Skin - Be Rock Solid!!

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Ustādh Abū Ḥakīm sheds light on the path of those who stand up and defend the daʿwah against the enemies and opponents to the truth. He explains that they need thick skin, that they will face harm in the form of accusations, slanders including elaborate fabrications, all things that will test their mettle. He mentions that they need to be rocks, solid, able to continue upon the path of uprightness unbothered by attackers, like water off a ducks back.

The benefit is excerpted from the lecture entitled: Benefits from the Introduction to al-Ibānah al-Ṣughrá by Ustādh Abū Ḥakīm, from the 2018 Summer Seminar: The Methodology of the Salaf in Times of Fitnah.

Benefit: Do Not Trust the Opinions of Those Youth Who Isolate Themselves from the Elder Duʿāt and Established Salafī Centres

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Q&A with Shaykh Ḥasan ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Banná: Egyptian Treasures in Refutation of Doubtful Manhaj Trolls

On the evening of Saturday, November 12th, 2017 (Safar, 23rd, 1439), our noble brother Shākir al-Afghānī had the pleasure of an audience with Shaykh Ḥasan ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Banná. After greeting the Shaykh and informing him of the activities at TROID in Toronto, Canada, and exchanging pleasantries, he mentioned the following doubts that are spread nowadays in order to split the ranks of the Salafīs (i.e. in Canada, USA, UK etc.).

Doubt #3: Do Not Trust the Opinions of Those Youth Who Isolate Themselves from the Elder Duʿāt and Established Salafī Centres

Questioner: Likewise Shaykh, when these students return from either Makkah, Riyāḍ or al-Madīnah, they return claiming salafiyyah but they isolate themselves from the established Salafīs (i.e. elders). For example, they isolate themselves from the likes of Abū Khadījah and Abū Ḥakīm. In Canada, they isolate themselves from the Salafīs at Masjid al-Furqān (TROID).

Shaykh: Do you mean they speak ill of them?

Questioner: Yes.

Shaykh: In the name of Allāh, all praise is due to Allāh, and may the peace and blessings of Allāh be upon the Messenger of Allāh, ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam.

The people of innovation speak ill about Ahl al-Sunnah. Abū Khadījah is from ʿAhl al-Sunnah, Abū Ḥakīm Bilāl is from Ahl al-Sunnah and Ḥasan al-Ṣumālī is from Ahl al-Sunnah. They are from the callers of Ahl al-Sunnah. This is something which is well-known.

If they err, we will tell them to retract their error, and they will retract. So why do you speak ill of them? Do you want to cause fitnah for them? Do you want to deter the people from them?

The people of Sunnah are few in number, how can you speak ill about the people of Sunnah? Those who speak against the people of Sunnah are not from them. Rather, they concur with the people of innovation.

So my dear brothers, do not speak ill of these Duʿāt, the likes of Abū Khadījah and other than him because they are from the callers of Ahl al-Sunnah. If they err, we will tell them to retract. Do not try to discredit them and ruin their reputation because this is something that hurts the People of Sunnah.

May Allāh reward you for listening to this advice, may Allāh bless you and may the peace and blessings of Allāh be upon the Messenger of Allāh, ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam.

Benefit: Everyone Today Is Considered a Scholar?!

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

A brief discussion on the humility of the scholars, their fleeing from praise and grand titles. This example is then contrasted with those in the West who embrace titles, demand praise and seek recognition for everything they do, small or large. Importantly, Ustādh Abū Idrīs mentions the importance of clarity, those men who stand up in times of fitnah and are courageous, defending the truth, defending the scholars, not simply those who seek fame off the letters that follow their names.

The benefit is excerpted from the lecture entitled: Benefits from the Introduction to al-Ibānah al-Ṣughrá by Ustādh Abū Ḥakīm, from the 2018 Summer Seminar: The Methodology of the Salaf in Times of Fitnah.

Benefit: Following the Guidance - Shaykh ʿAbdullāh al-Bukhārī

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

In his famous poem, al-Ḥāʾiyyah, the great scholar ibn Abī Dāwūd (d. AH 316) began with the following: Hold tight to the rope of Allāh and to the guidance. In this benefit, Shakyh ʿAbd Allāh al-Bukhārī, hafiẓahullāh, of Madīnah explains these opening lines by explaining a verse from the Book of Allāh. Our Shaykh touches on very important points of ʿaqīdah and manhaj. Listen to this short clip and take heed; may Allāh guide you to His Straight Path. May Allāh reward our brothers from Salafi Publications for translating this lecture at the Five Pillars Dawrah Series. For more on the al-Ḥāʾiyyah poem, check out the al-Ḥāʾiyyah Poem class audio from our brother Abū al-ʿAbbās Mūsá Richardson. Also, be sure to listen to the other lectures by our scholars from the Five Pillars Dawrah Series.

Benefit: Following Up the Doubts and Suspicions of Those Who Wish To Split the Ranks of the Salafis eventually leads to joining Ahl al-Bidʿah

Doubt #2: Following up the doubts and suspicions of those who wish to split the ranks of the Salafis eventually leads to joining Ahl al-Bidʿah

Questioner: How should we advise those who are impressed and trialed by these types of people (i.e. those who spread doubts in communities)?

Shaykh: They should be warned and informed that these people have speech which is in opposition to that which Ahl al-Sunnah are upon; they belittle the books of Ahl al-Sunnah and they speak ill of the dūʿāt of Ahl al-Sunnah. These are actions of the people of innovation, so if you accompany them, you would be treading the path of the people of innovation. Therefore O youth, do not accompany them, remain with the people of Sunnah who are pure.

But if you do accompany these types of people, they will cause you much fitnah and deviate you from the Sunnah, so beware of them, as the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) mentioned:

If you see those who follow the unclear verses (of the Qurʾān), then beware of them.

So beware of them and let them stay far from us. Leave them in their way and leave us to our way. Keep to your brothers from Ahl al-Sunnah, may Allāh bless you.

Questioner: Jazākum Allāhu Khayrā

Benefit: Hiding behind al-Albānī, Ibn Bāz, Ibn ʿUthaymīn?

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Something came to my mind about a question I was asked the other night about people who only mention references to the scholars of recent times, specifically: Al-Albānī, Ibn Bāz, and Ibn ʿUthaymīn. You may recall that I said that these are - of course - the greatest scholars of recent times, and we are happy to hear people mention them with goodness and attach themselves to them. I also mentioned that some people claim an attachment to them and then contradict their teachings, and so a good and wise tactic to use in calling them to the Truth would be to mention to them what those scholars have said about that issue that they are mistaken in, so that they could accept the correction more easily. And I alluded to the idea of those three - may Allāh have Mercy on them - recommending other scholars and warning against certain callers. And that could be a way of introducing them to or helping them establish contact with other noteworthy scholars who are still alive.

I'd like to mention a specific example of this, that is sadly too common to hear. People say, "I prefer the manhaj of Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn over the manhaj of Shaykh Rabīʿ al-Madkhalī..." Or they may say Shaykh Ibn Bāz or Shaykh al-Albānī in place of Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn, or all three of them! Let's be perfectly clear on this issue - this is not the speech of the people of knowledge. All three of those great scholars were upon the same manhaj of Shaykh Rabīʿ ibn Hādī al-Madkhalī (may Allāh preserve him) - the manhaj of the Salaf. This is not merely a devoted student's opinion; rather, all three of those scholars have clear and specific praises of Shaykh Rabīʿ, his teachings, his books, his recordings, and even his refutations. As for the statements of taxi drivers and their students, or anonymous internet writers, that the manhaj of Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn was other than the manhaj of Shaykh Rabīʿ, etc... then it is simply jahl murak-kab (compound ignorance), when a person hears a specific point of disagreement between two scholars and assumes that it means that a major disagreement has taken place and that they have parted ways and gone forth on two different paths! As an extremely clear example, here are the words of Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn himself, about the visit of Shaykh Rabīʿ to his city (Unayzah) around the year 1421, shortly before the death of Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn:...Our brother (Shaykh Rabīʿ), may Allāh grant us and him success, is upon Salafīyyah, the way of the Salaf. And I do not mean here that Salafīyyah is a ḥizb (party) which is set up to oppose the Muslims outside of it, but I mean by Salafīyyah, that he is upon the path of the Salaf in his Manhaj. Especially in the field of actualising Tawḥīd and throwing aside what opposes this [manhaj]. The visit of our brother, Shaikh Rabīʿ bin Hādī to this region, our city, Unayzah, no doubt will have a good effect, and it will also become clear to many of the people what used to be hidden from them due to the scare-mongering and rumour-mongering, and also letting loose the tongue [of discord]. You may access the original Arabic audio, transcription, and translation, including other helpful articles on the topic here: http://www.themadkhalis.com/md/articles/ebhen-shaykh-ibn-uthaymin-on-shaykh-rabi-al-madkhali.cfm

So let those who insists that Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn was upon a different manhaj than Shaykh Rabīʿ repent from their audacious lie against Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn, and their oppression of Shaykh Rabīʿ as well. I mention this illustration since it is something that affected a dear brother of mine, may Allāh guide me and him to what is correct. And it is generally relevant to the question I was asked, as people claim attachments to the likes of those great scholars, and may hide these kinds of sentiments, revealing them every now and then. And it really really hurts to hear people slander a great man like Shaykh Rabīʿ, a man of the Sunnah, a concerned advisor, patient, full of love for the Muslims and hope for the success of their da'wah, busy with knowledge day and night, reading, writing, researching, compiling, falling asleep on a thin mattress on the floor with a book on his chest and books all around him, critical of his own self and his own students, a brave and guided critic whose writings are blessed with academic strength and clarity, a gracious host, a father-figure to people all over the world, a man who cries when he hears about things that harm the image of our da'wah, a man who reads a book about the history of the righteous Salaf and the trials they faced and becomes engaged in the story and attached to it more devoutly than how common people watch an action movie!! "The flesh of the scholars is poisonous! The way that Allāh exposes those who belittle them is well known! Those who unleash their tongues (with falsehood) against the scholars, Allāh shall cause them to suffer from the death of their hearts before their lives end!" (So let those who contraḍīct his order be warned that a trial may befall them, or a painful punishment!) (Words attributed to Ibn ʿAsākir, quoted in al-Nawawī’s Tibyān) I say this while I praise no one above Allāh, al-ʿAlī al-Qadīr, and it is HE alone who is his Reckoner. (And I do not endorse or encourage the blind following of Shaykh Rabīʿ, or any other specific scholar.) Mūsá Richardson.1

Benefit: How the Salaf Dealt with Ahl al-Bidʿah vs. Some of the Astray Youth of Today

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Shaykh Rabīʿ ibn Hādī al-Madkhalī, in his book The Methodology of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamāʿah in Criticizing Men, Books and Groups, says,

"Let the person look at this great difference between the position of the Muslims that Shaykh al-Islām ibn Taymīyyah is talking about, and how they dealt with those who had statements of opposition (to the Salaf); they were individuals explaining the circumstances of those people and warning the Ummah from those people, and this was wājib (obligatory) by agreement of the Muslims. Then look to the reality nowadays of many of those who connect themselves to Salafīyyah and other than them, how they consider warning against bidʿah and its people as being harsh and severe.

How far is the distance between these two positions (when it comes to warning against the people of innovation), and woe to the strangeness of this dīn and woe to the strangeness of those who defend and protect the dīn! For by Allāh! Verily the position they are taking has many effects. There are youth from the Salafīs who mix and start to become a part of a group that is astray, and will defend that astray group and have loyalty for that group and have enmity and hatred for that group, and some of them get with other groups, as others have done and live in a state of confusion. Some of them will become jealous of and protect Ahl al-Bidʿah more than they are jealous and protective over the Manḥaj al-Salafī and its people.

O Allah save your dīn! O Allāh, save this daʿwah! O Allāh support this daʿwah! Verily you are the One who answers duʿāʾ. For verily Your dīn and its supporters are in severe strangeness, they have been abandoned by those whom they used to hope would help; and the people of Ahl al-Bidʿah are being harsh upon them, and there is no supporter except you, for you are the Best Guardian and the best of those who help."

This is the state of affairs today between the Salafīs. For this individual did not understand the Manḥaj of the Salaf, and so now you find him in love with Ahl al-Bidʿah and still calling himself a Salafī, and Allāh’s aid and assistance is sought..1

Benefit: Is Abandoning al-Halabī Abandoning the Manhaj and Legacy of al-Albānī?

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

An excerpt from the recent series 'Points of Explanation from Sharḥ al-Sunnah of Imām al-Barbahaaree' narrated by Dāwūd Adīb during his visit to Toronto, Canada. The supporters of al-Ḥalabī claim that abandoning ʿAlī Ḥasan al-Ḥalabī is to abandon the late Shaykh and Scholar, Imām Muḥammad Naasird-Dīn al-Albānī. With no outlets to respond to the concise refutations against al-Ḥalabī, they turn to rhetoric like this to appeal to the hearts of Ahl al-Sunnah. Is this claim true? Is this abandoning Imām al-Albānī's work, his manhaj, his efforts? Is Halabee today a reflection of al-Albaane? They also say that Shaykh Rabīʿ was too quick or too severe in his dealings with al-Ḥalabī but how did Shaykh Rabīʿ handle al-Ḥalabī and those like him during the last few decades? Listen and understand in shāʾ Allāh.

Benefit: Listen Attentively Even if You Know

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

When one informs you regarding an affair of the religion or a matter regarding worldly affairs which you already have knowledge of, it is from good character that you do not dispute it. Rather, you listen attentively as if you have not come across this (information) before and (act like) you have benefitted from him, like the intelligent men use to do.

The benefits of this are, inspiration and delight for the narrator [i.e. as opposed to rejecting his narration], safeguarding yourself from self-amazement and safeguarding yourself from bad character because disputing with the narrator over the narration is considered bad character.

Translator's note: There are many examples from the Salaf with regards to listening attentively to the narrator as if you have never come across that which he is narrating to you, even if in reality you have. From these examples is that of Muādh ibn Sʿad al-ʾAʿawar, who said: “I was sitting with ʿAṭā ibn Abī Rabāḥ whilst a man narrated a narration, and then one of the men present elaborated upon the narration to which ʿAṭā ibn Abī Rabāḥ replied, ‘What is this behaviour?’ I listen to the narration of a man whilst I have more knowledge concerning that narration than him, but I (act like) I don’t know anything.” [Rawdat al-ʿUqalā pg. 72].

A Reflection on the History of TROID

Our esteemed brother, Ustādh Abū al-Ḥasan Mālik al-Akhdar, reflects on visiting TROID for the first time in 15+ years. He speaks vividly about the early days of TROID and the daʿwah in Canada. He mentions the struggles to establish the current Islamic Centre and Masjid al-Furqān, from the early days of congregating in a small office, cramming a dozen or so brothers on the floor, leaning forward, lending their ears towards computer speakers broadcasting telelinks on Paltalk. Collecting and spreading cassettes. He mentions the joy he and others had visiting this small space in Canada, to spend time with beloved brothers for the sake of Allāh, united, striving, not worrying about numbers or buildings etc. just daʿwah, minute by minute, day by day, building. Two decades of unity, togetherness and striving to connect the people to the scholars, to spread their works by way of articles, audio, live lessons, seminars, telelinks, publications and more. We ask Allāh to reward Abū al-Ḥasan for his tutelage, his mentoring, his companionship, from 1998 till present.

Benefit: Refuting Falsehood is from Removing Harm from the Path

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Shaykh ʿAbd al-Razāq al-Badr mentioned:

The people are divided into three categories with regards to removing that which is harmful from the path.

1) Those who remove that which is harmful from the path
2) Those who discard removing that which is harmful from the path
3) Those who place that which is harmful upon the path

All of these three categories of people are from the people of īmān, but they are not equal.

There is also a very beautiful benefit in this narration, it is that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) considered the removal of that which is harmful from the path as an act of faith. The meaning of, “that which is harmful” is something tangible which harms and hinders the people from their course of achieving their worldly interests. Likewise, with all the more reason, removing that which is harmful from the path also means: removing that which hinders the people from their path towards the obedience of their Lord, and this is also considered an act of faith.

Therefore, refuting the people of innovation, warning against them and refuting their doubts is all from removing that which is harmful from the path; and it is considered to be from Īmān (faith).

Benefit: Showing Outward Love for the Salaf and the Scholars Whilst Attacking the Salafīs and Defaming Them?

Doubt #7: Showing Outward Love for the Salaf and the Scholars Whilst Attacking the Salafīs and Defaming Them

Questioner: O’ shaykh, some of the youth who have not studied have become victims of these new students who have studied a short time. They [the youth who have not studied] say: How can they [i.e. meaning young students] be fitnah makers or people of innovation if they have nothing but [outward] love for the likes of Shaykh Rabīʿ, Shaykh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb, Ibn Taymiyyah and the likes of them [from the Salaf]?

So these youth have not understood how they can be regarded as fitnah makers or people of innovation and misguidance.

Shaykh: In the name of Allāh, all praise is due to Allāh, and may the peace and blessings of Allāh be upon the Messenger of Allāh, ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam.

The people of sunnah love the people of sunnah; the Salafīs love the Salafīs. Therefore, how can they say that we are with the likes of Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb or Rabīʿ ibn Hādī while criticising other Salafīs? Rather you are not Salafīs! The Salafī does not speak ill of the Salafī even if he was young in age, or just a beginner [i.e. recently learned about Salafiyyah] or possess little knowledge. The Salafī loves all Salafīs, whether they be new or old.

As for the innovator, he may say Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb is a great man and that Rabīʿ ibn Hādī is a great man who we love, but at the same time speaking ill of others (salafīs). This does not benefit him, rather, he is untruthful. If he was truthful, he would have love for all Salafīs, young or old, new or seasoned.

So this is a sign of the people of innovation! They say we are with Ibn Taymiyyah whilst speaking ill of the Salafīs. They say we are with Ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb whilst speaking ill of the Salafīs. They are not sincere in their ascription to Salafiyyah, rather, they are being deceptive. The (true) Salafī loves all of the Salafīs, both the new ones and the old ones. So fear Allāh and have love for the Salafīs and speak nothing but good about them. Do not speak ill of them and cause fitnah for them and for yourselves. May Allāh bless you.

Sincere Advice from Shaykh Ḥasan ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Banná to Those Who Seek Division and Fitnah

Questioner: If those fitnah makers are listening O’ Shaykh, what is your advice to them?

Shaykh: If they listen to this speech of ours [i.e. accept the advice], and are upon the Sunnah, then they are from us and we are from them. What should we say to you? We want you to be with the people of Sunnah! So if you leave off innovations and the speech of the people of innovation [i.e. and from the speech of the people of innovation is speaking ill of Ahl al-Sunnah], we will be happy for you and we will become brothers for the sake of Allāh on the condition that you agree with all the principles and guidelines of Ahl al-Sunnah. Do not oppose the Sunnah!

If you return from the speech, statements and views of the people of innovation and follow the Sunnah in totality, we will be happy for you and we become stronger, because the individual gains strength firstly from Allāh and then through (the help of) his brothers. Increasing the ranks of the people of Sunnah is indeed strength for us in both this life and in the hereafter. May Allāh reward you and grant you understanding of his religion.
