From the introduction 

An example of the usage and meaning of the term Salaf:

There is no doubt that this daʿwah (salafiyyah) is the true daʿwah and ascription to it is correct. Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymīyyah, raḥimahullāh, said:

There is no blame on the one who outwardly manifests, ascribes himself, and attributes himself to the madh′hab of the Salaf. Rather, it is an obligation to accept that from him by consensus. For indeed the madh′hab of the Salaf is nothing but the truth.1

Later in the introduction, some quotes are mentioned from King 'ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz Ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Āli-Sa'ood concerning the Islamic history of Saudi Arabia:

Rather, this nation, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, may Allāh safeguard it, is a Salafī nation and its daʿwah is a Salafī daʿwah just as its King, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ‘Abdur-Raḥmān Āli Saʿūd, raḥimahullāh, has textualized in his address which he gave during the Ḥajj in 1365H (1945). He said: “Verily I am a Salafī man and my ʿaqīdah is Salafī, upon which I traverse along with what it entails upon the Book and the Sunnah.”

He said within the same address:

They say that we are Wahhābees, while the reality is that we are Salafiyyoon—vanguards of our religion—and we follow the Book of Allāh and the Sunnah of His Messenger (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhī wa-sallam) and there is not between us and the Muslims except the Book of Allāh and the Sunnah of His Messenger (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhī wa-sallam).1

Benefit: Corrupt Character

Shaykh ʿAbd al-Razāq al-Badr mentioned: Whoever worships other than Allāh possesses the worst of characters. Where is the character in a man who was created, provided for, favoured with blessings, gifted health and safety by Allāh, then worships and turns towards other than Allāh? For this reason, ill character is tied to shirk. Everyone who directs worship to other than Allāh has bad manners. This is because the individual’s shirk is part of his character. Rather, it [i.e. shirk] is the most atrocious aspect of his character.

Do not be deceived by some of the good dealings you may find with some of the disbelievers because it is only for worldly gains and other objectives. They do not observe good conduct hoping to be rewarded by Allāh on the meeting day.

Benefit: Disseminating Knowledge

ʿAbdullāh ibn Mubārak (raḥimuhullāḥ) said: "I do not know of anything, other than prophethood, better than disseminating knowledge." 
[Tahdhīb al-Kāmil 16/20]

Commentary of Shaykh ʿAbd al-Razāq al-Badr: Glad tidings to the people of knowledge who disseminate and spread knowledge amongst the Ummah. This is a great honour! May Allāh raise their ranks, allow us to realize their true value, grant us love for them and permit us to benefit from their knowledge.

Benefit: Do Not Deceive the People in the Name of the Sunnah!

Do not deceive the people in the name of the Sunnah! The Sunnah has become like a robe; if they wish they wear it, and if they wish they take it off.

We do not say that the Sunnah is our reign or that Salafiyyah is our reign. Salafiyyah is to return to that which the Salaf were upon. Was Imām al-Bukhārī a ḥizbī (partisan)? Was Imām Aḥmad a ḥizbī? Was ʿAbdullāh ibn Mubārak a ḥizbī? Was Abū Hurayrah a ḥizbī?

They were not ḥizbīs. Rather, they use to call to the book of Allāh and the Sunnah of His Messenger (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam).

Benefit: Do the Salafīs Get Exhausted Constantly Calling to Tawḥīd?

Shaykh al-Albānī: Nūḥ (ʿalayhi al-salām) remained with his people for nine hundred and fifty years, spending his time devoted to calling (the people) to Tawḥīd. Thus, it is required from us that we start with that which the Prophet (Muḥammad) ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam started with, and it was to firstly rectify that which has become corrupt with regards to the ʿaqīdah of the Muslims.

Benefit: Give What You Can O Salafī!

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

An admonition from the late Abū ʿUways (raḥimahullāh) to the community to give...to give before the time comes when there will be no one to give zakāh to. He laments how we used to spend money and support frivilous causes in jahilliyah or before coming to the Sunnah. He also gives an example of the one who claims to love Salafīyyah but does not want to give to the masjid because he doesn't agree with some of the people on the shūrah or how they run the masjid. He asks: you don't see it, ilm-online (telelinks), students of knowledge overseas, connections to the schoalrs etc (the Shaytān is real!)? A straight-talking clear advice about giving and not wastintg the opportunity to aid the daʿwah.


Benefit: Given the Choice - Marry a Sister upon the Sunnah or a Sister upon Innovation?

ʿImrān ibn Hitān, al-Sunnī (meaning that he was a sunnī) thumma (then he became a) al-Khārijī: He adopted the madh-hab of the khawārij during the later stages of his life. The reason for that was his cousin (female) was of the madh-hab of the khawārij, so he wanted to make her change; however, she ended up making him change to her madh-hab!1

Ibn Kathīr further stated:

“‘ʿImrān ibn Hitaan Al-Khaarijee: At first he was from Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jamāʿah. However he married a very beautiful woman from the Khawārij and he loved her immensely, whereas he was unattractive. Thus he wanted to change her to the Sunnah but she refused, hence he deviated along with her to her madh-hab. He was a prolific poet. He is the one who praised the killer of ʿAlī (ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muljim) by stating the following:

"A strike from an ever-repentant one; he did not do it except to attain the pleasure of the One who possesses the ‘Arsh. 

Indeed, I will always remember this act for I consider him one to be of the most faithful servants in the sight of Allāh."2

Imām al-Dhahabī's wife told him, "I and you will be in Jannah together because you were blessed (i.e. to have a very pretty wife) and you showed gratitude, and I was tested and I was patient."3

As Abū ‘Āliyyah said, “Two favours Allāh bestowed upon me and I don’t know which is greater than the other: the first one is that He made me a Muslim, and second is that He did not make me a Harooree (i.e. a Khaarijee).”4

Benefit: Good Manners Are From Salafiyyah!

One doubt often presented by the people of innovation is that the Salafīs are harsh and that they pay no attention to manners. What it is intended by this false claim is to turn Muslims away from the correct belief and methodology. In a Kitāb at-Tawḥīd class, our brother Abū al-ʿAbbās Mūsá Richardson, may Allāh reward him, responds to this incorrect notion. Manners, as mentioned by our brother, are very important in our religion. Listen to this brief benefit. May Allāh guide you and us to the Straight Path. Learn the true Salafī position on manners. Benefit: How Do You Determine the Truth?

Shaykh Muqbil al-Wādʿīmentioned: If your scale [in determining the truth] is based upon the majority, then the majority is dispraised. If your scale is based upon eloquence and fluency in speech, then, Allāh has described the hypocrites with persuasive tongues. Allāh mentions:

وَإِن يَقُولُوا تَسْمَعْ لِقَوْلِهِمْ
And when they speak, you listen to their words[Surah al-Munāfiqūn, 63:4]

That which must be considered [in determining the truth] is recognizing the attributes of the people of truth. They are those who call the people to the book of Allāh and the Sunnah of His Messenger (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). They seek neither reward nor gratitude from the people (for this).

Benefit: Ibn al-Qayyim's Defence of the Followers of the Sunnah

In defence of the followers of the Sunnah, al-Imām Ibn al-Qayyim wrote the following lines of poetry, refuting those who reject the Qurʾān and Sunnah for what their forefathers were upon.

قالوا له خالفت أقوال الشيو... خ ولم يبالوا الخلف للفرقان
خالفت أقوال الشيوخ فأنتم... خالفتم من جاء بالقرآن
خالفتم قول الرسول وإنما... خالفت من جراه قول فلان

يا حبذا ذاك الخلاف فإنه... عين الوفاق لطاعة الرحمن 
أو ما علمت بأن أعداء الرسو... ل عليه عابوا الخلف بالبهتان 
لشيوخهم ولما عليه قد مضى... أسلافهم في سالف الأزمان 
ما العيب إلا في خلاف النص لا... رأي الرجال وفكرة الأذهان 
أنتم تعيبونا بهذا وهو من... توفيقنا والفضل للمنان 
فليهنكم خلف النصوص ويهننا... خلف الشيوخ أيستوي الخلفان 
والله ما تسوى عقول جميع أهـ... ـل الأرض نصا صح ذا تبيان 
حتى نقدمها عليه معرضـ... ـين مؤولين محرّفي القرآن 
والله إن النص فيما بيننا... لأجل من آراء كل فلان

Benefit: Is the Daʿwah of Salafiyyah a Return to Fitan?

The people of innovation and the disbelievers have expended a great deal of effort to bring about controversy and confusion with regards to the reality of Shaykh al-Islām Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb and his call to the way of the Salaf. He succeeded in returning many Muslims from the worshipping of graves and other than Allāh to the Tawḥīd of Islām. Of course, he came across a lot of opposition from groups such as the Ṣūfīs, who viewed this da'wah as a fitnah. This false notion, spread through their propagation, is present today. Benefit: It Is Not a Proof That So-and-So Is Salafī Simply Because He Studied with a Shaykh

The noble Shaykh, Aḥmad Ibn ʿUmar Bazmūl: Be mindful, some people use as a proof (the fact that) so-and-so from the students of Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn or from the students of Shaykh Ibn Bāz, that so-and-so (this person) is Salafī. No. This is not a distinguishing sign according to the Salafīs. It is only the Minhaj, manners, and attestation.

Due to this, we frequently get the question: "A man came to us claiming that so-and-so was from the students of Shaykh Muqbil; from the students of Shaykh Rabīʿ; from the students of Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn." Is this sufficient? The answer is no. Not until he is attested to. Hence, he may be, and this is something well-known, he may be from the present day opposers. Rather, perhaps some of them are Takfīrī; some of them are perhaps Takfīrī, even if he ascribes to having studied under Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn. Due to that, it is not to be used as a proof that so-and-so is similar to him. Clear? This is a benefit, so pay attention to it.

Due to this, when ʿAlī Al-Halabee comes to us and says: "I am from the students of al-Albānī." That's it, he is ruled to enter directly into Jannah?! He is ruled to have knowledge absolutely?! No, this does not suffice you; not until you walk and traverse upon the methodology of the Salaf upon which al-Albānī traversed, may Allāh have mercy upon him. If you oppose it then you are not from him, even if you clung to him from the time he began his studies up until the time he died, this would not suffice you. For the scholars free themselves from those who oppose (the truth). They free themselves from those who oppose (the truth). For this reason, this is of no benefit. So pay attention to this.

Benefit: Leaving the Salafīs Because of Their "Bad Manners"?

It is established in the Book of Allāh and the Sunnah of His Messenger, ṣallallāhu ʿalayhī wa-sallam, that mixing with the People of Innovation and joining their ranks is impermissible. A well-known catchphrase of some misguided people who leave the Salafīs and mix with the People of Ḥizbiyyah is "The Salafīs are harsh and have bad manners". Are "bad manners" a valid excuse to abandon the People of the Sunnah and flee to the People of Ḥizbiyyah? In this audio clip, our brother Abū Dihyah Dāwūd Adīb, addresses this statement based on the Tafsīr of Imām al-Shawkānī, raḥimahullāh. So listen to this short benefit, may Allāh make you from those who are firm on His Straight Path.


Benefit: Lenient with Ahl al-Bidʿah, Harsh with Ahl al-Sunnah!

Lenient with Ahl al-Bidʿah,, Harsh with Ahl al-Sunnah! - A Signpost of the Hidden Ḥizbī?

The following lecture was conducted in 2002, almost 10 years ago. It reflects the position of Ahl al-Sunnah regarding innovation and its people. It illustrates the efforts of the Salafī duʿāt in the West to defend this noble religion and the fact that the same type of arguments (to water down al-Manhaj as-Salafī) existed then and before then, the manner in which the argument is made is all that changes. Same impostors, different disguises. So today, like then, we see the people expanding the raḍīus of 'al-Salafīyyah' to include Ahl al-Bidʿah, and the Hizbiyyeen, we see them criticizing the Salafī, sympathetic with the ḥizbī, searching after the faults of ahl al-sunnah (line by line, statement by statement) yet lenient and gentle with their opponents and enemies of the Salafī Da'wah. The following contains quotes from the lecture by Ḥasan al-Ṣumālī entitled, Advice to the Salafīs of the West Concerning Jarh wa-al-Taʿdīl (Criticism and Praise): Look at the wise insight of the noble scholar, Shaykh Rabīʿ Ibn Hādī al-Madkhalī: "And strangely you find the youth becoming [audio unclear] with the people of innovation where they raise their banners and carry their defence and they defend them and aid them, and it is the case where their tongues turn to Ahl al-Sunnah and they attack Ahl al-Sunnah but as for Ahl al-Bidʿah, and Misguidance, they make excuses for them and defend them!" This statement from his book written over a decade ago, it is as if he saw the army approaching from a distance and warned the townsfolk in advance! Is this not what we see today? Abū ʿAbdullāh mentions: "Now the scales have switched, and now we see those people [who used to be with us] harsh upon Ahl al-Sunnah, their tongues quick to move, easy to move against ahl al-sunnah and to backbite and slander them but they seek excuses from the people of shubuhaat (doubts) and desires…" "…so a Salafī brother, they will say, he speaks too much about the people of innovation, he's harsh, he deals too much in jarh wa-al-taʿdīl, he is hadaadee (extreme) but when one comes towards who cooperates with the ḥizbiyyoon, they say to him 'you cannot speak about these matters for they are for the ʿUlamāʾ, O Miskīn, O Jāhil, Do you not know that you have made jarh of the Salafī, when you say that he [the Salafī] has backbitten (when he speaks about ahl al-bidʿah), this is (actual) gheebah (backbiting) but like we said, the scale has changed, and now it has come a time that people are asking us to be soft and lenient with ahl al-bidʿah and ahwā and harsh against ahl al-sunnah." So the da'wah is one, has not changed, the enemies of ahl al-sunnah, change colours like a chameleon, new rhetoric, old agenda. Benefit: Plants Amongst Ahl al-Sunnah

There are individuals who are planted amongst Ahl al-Sunnah. They support the people of innovation and wage war against Ahl al-Sunnah‬. ‪These types of individuals are fom the most dangerous of people to Salafiyyah and the Salafis. ‬

Benefit: Referring to Oneself as 'Salafī'

Nowadays, the followers and sympathisers of al-Ḥalabī focus heavily on rebuking the term 'Salafī', with the intention of causing distance between the Muslims and the methodology of the Salaf, the scholars who defend it, and the people who proceed upon it. This is a carefully designed scheme to sway the unsuspecting one away from issues of manhaj and away from ascertaining the truth from falsehood, sunnah from bid'ah. They claim "upon the Qurʾān and Sunnah and the way of the Salaf...but not Salafīyyah the ḥizb!" This is their attempt to distance the person away from investigating salafiyyah, for if he were to do so, inevitably he would come to know the Salafī scholars and therefore come to know the reality of al-Ḥalabī and his companions. A term they used to defend that they now dispose of since it is no longer favourable to their interests and those whom they now cooperate with from Ahl al-Bidʿah,. What do some of the scholars of our time say about the terms 'Salafī' and 'salafiyyah'?

Shaykh ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz Ibn Bāz, raḥimahullāh, was asked this question: “What do you say about one who is referred to as ‘as-Salafī’ and ‘al-Atharī’? Is this a tazkiyah?” He, raḥimahullāh, responded: “If he is truthful that he is an Atharī (one who follows the narrations) or a Salafī, then there is no harm in it. (This is) a tazkiyah which is inevitable; a tazkiyah that is obligatory.”1

Likewise, the Shaykh, the ʿAllāmah, Ṣāliḥ ibn Fawzān al-Fawzān mentioned it in al-Ajwibah al-Mufīdah, wherein he was asked: “What is al-Salafīyyah? And is it obligatory to traverse upon its methodology and cling to it?” He said: “al-Salafīyyah is traversing upon the methodology of the Salaf, from the Companions, the Tābiʿūn and the virtuous generations in the ʿaqīdah, understanding, and manners. It is obligatory upon the Muslim to traverse upon this methodology."2

Benefit: Refuting Falsehood is from Removing Harm from the Path

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Shaykh ʿAbd al-Razāq al-Badr mentioned:

The people are divided into three categories with regards to removing that which is harmful from the path.

1) Those who remove that which is harmful from the path
2) Those who discard removing that which is harmful from the path
3) Those who place that which is harmful upon the path

All of these three categories of people are from the people of īmān, but they are not equal.

There is also a very beautiful benefit in this narration, it is that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) considered the removal of that which is harmful from the path as an act of faith. The meaning of, “that which is harmful” is something tangible which harms and hinders the people from their course of achieving their worldly interests. Likewise, with all the more reason, removing that which is harmful from the path also means: removing that which hinders the people from their path towards the obedience of their Lord, and this is also considered an act of faith.

Therefore, refuting the people of innovation, warning against them and refuting their doubts is all from removing that which is harmful from the path; and it is considered to be from Īmān (faith).

Benefit: Regarding the Toronto Community Making ʿUmrah (AH 1438)

Our brother and teacher, Mūsá Richardson, commends the Salafīs of Toronto for going on ʿUmrah (AH 1438) in such great numbers, and going with upright Salafi companions. This, he said, is from the signs of goodness in the community (Toronto). He makes duʿāʾ that Allāh, subḥānahu wa-taʿālá, brings them back to their community safe and sound and that He blesses them in their companionship, acts of worship and their visits with the scholars, and also, that He brings them back in good health, and with accepted actions, forgiven sins and raised ēmān.


Benefit: Salafiyyah Is a Daʿwah Distinct from Ahl al-Bidʿah

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Let the reader compare the approach to daʿwah of the late Imām of Yemen, Muqbil Ibn Hādī al-Wādiʿī (raḥimahullāh), in comparison with the likes of Abū Usamah and those whom he praises, who line up alongside people of innovation and ḥizbiyyah, praising them and being silent about their innovation. The words of the scholars speak volumes:

Ḥasan Ṣumāli recounts:

"I close with a piece of advice that I hope will benefit Abū Usāmah and his likes, that I heard directly from the Imām of Ahl al-Sunnah, our Shaykh, Muqbil Ibn Hādī al-Wādiʿī (d. AH 1421) when he said,

'The call of the people of the Sunnah in Yemen did not spread, or from the greatest reasons for the spread of the call of the people of the Sunnah in Yemen is that they distanced themselves from every innovator, and they do not care, even if this person [whom they abandoned] had once studied in Dammāj, such as ʿAbdullāh al-Ḥāshidī, ʿAbd al-Majīd al-Raymī, Muḥammad al-Baydānī, Muḥammad al-Mahdī and ʿAqīl al-Maqṭarī...

It is incumbent to be distinct and clear [in one's call] and it is incumbent to stay far away from the innovators and to warn against them.'"1
