Benefit: Shaykh Fawzān - Mentioning the Good Qualities (of the Refuted One) Is Calling to Them!

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Principles in the Salafī Manhaj in Dealing with Refutation and the Refuted One

The Shaykh, the ʿAllāmah, Ṣāliḥ ibn Fawzān al-Fawzān, may Allāh preserve him, after he was asked a number of questions concerning the (different) groups, was asked the following question: “O Shaykh! Do we warn against them without mentioning their good qualities for example, or do we mention their good qualities and their bad (qualities)?”1

He responded:

If you mention their good qualities, then you have called to them... No, do not mention their good qualities. Mention the error which they are upon only. For you are not responsible for studying their deeds and or evaluating their personalities. You are responsible for clarifying the error which they have in order that they may repent from it, and in order that others may be warned against them. As for if you were to mention their good qualities then they would say: ‘This is the one we desire.’2

Benefit: Shaykh Ḥasan ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Banná on Witnessing Salafi Publications

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

The following comments are from Shaykh Ḥasan Ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Banná during his recent visit to Salafī Publications in the UK:

"All praise be to Allāh, mā shāʿ Allāh, they have an organisation (in da'wah); they have a maktabah salafiyyah; they have a school; a kindergarten or primary school, all these things are tremendous and all praise be to Allāh they have big numbers with them. They also have with them many mashaayikh, from amongst them Shaykh Abū Khadījah. They have knowledge, with them is knowledge. They also have others such as Shaykh Abū Ḥakīm Bilāl. All of these mā shāʿ Allāh, and many other people beside them - they are many people I met so I cannot recall their names - but those that are with them, I find that they are upon khayr (goodness). Since they have many students of knowledge with them from their likes, it is lāzim (incumbent) that they traverse upon their way, because they have indibaat (firm discipline, groundedness), and all praise is due to Allāh. They have cooperation and love for the sake of Allāh. They are from the best we have seen here from the different centres and (...) them upon steadfastness (..)."

Benefit: Shaykh Rabīʿ: "Their Stubbornness Does Not Harm Us"

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Here’s a beautiful excerpt from Shaykh Rabīʿs treatise “The Scholars of al-Jarḥ wa-al-Taʿadīl Are the Protectors of the Religion From the Plots of the Mulhidīn, Misguidance of the Innovators, and the Tales of the Liars.” It can be found in his set of books, treatises, and fatāwá, v.9/pp.13-14.

It highlights that even though people show stubbornness, a Muslim must still stay steadfast in clarifying falsehood. May Allāh bless the scholars of the Sunnah, their students, and those who help out according to their level for their defense of the correct understanding of Islām.

Shaykh, Dr. Rabīʿ ibn Hādī al-Madkhalī, may Allāh protect him, said:

...If the readers are convinced by what I say and mention from proofs and evidences, then this is good, and if not, we have become accustomed with sorrow, to some people displaying stubbornness, to having [personal] doubt, and to casting doubts [on others] about things that are certainties.

Even though this is the case, we will say, and we believe that their behavior does not harm us. It doesn’t harm us because our primary goal is to obliterate the evil and refute the falsehood of the people who cause tribulations. Our goal is also to clarify the corruptness of their principles.

After that, [we want] to defend the methodology of the People of the Sunnah and the tremendous principles that they laid down, those principles by which Islām isn’t established except by way of them. We also want to make known the lofty status of the scholars of ḥadīth and al-jarh wal-t’adeel, those who Allāh has protected the religion by way of them.

We believe this is obligatory upon us, and Allāh has given us the success to be able to do so. I hope for a good reward from Allāh for this effort.

Benefit: Showing Outward Love for the Salaf and the Scholars Whilst Attacking the Salafīs and Defaming Them?

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Q&A with Shaykh Ḥasan ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Banná: Egyptian Treasures in Refutation of Doubtful Manhaj Trolls

On the evening of Saturday, November 12th, 2017 (Safar, 23rd, 1439), our noble brother Shākir al-Afghānī had the pleasure of an audience with Shaykh Ḥasan ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Banná. After greeting the Shaykh and informing him of the activities at TROID in Toronto, Canada, and exchanging pleasantries, he mentioned the following doubts that are spread nowadays in order to split the ranks of the Salafīs (i.e. in Canada, USA, UK etc.).

Doubt #7: Showing Outward Love for the Salaf and the Scholars Whilst Attacking the Salafīs and Defaming Them

Questioner: O’ shaykh, some of the youth who have not studied have become victims of these new students who have studied a short time. They [the youth who have not studied] say: How can they [i.e. meaning young students] be fitnah makers or people of innovation if they have nothing but [outward] love for the likes of Shaykh Rabīʿ, Shaykh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb, Ibn Taymiyyah and the likes of them [from the Salaf]?

So these youth have not understood how they can be regarded as fitnah makers or people of innovation and misguidance.

Shaykh: In the name of Allāh, all praise is due to Allāh, and may the peace and blessings of Allāh be upon the Messenger of Allāh, ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam.

The people of sunnah love the people of sunnah; the Salafīs love the Salafīs. Therefore, how can they say that we are with the likes of Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb or Rabīʿ ibn Hādī while criticising other Salafīs? Rather you are not Salafīs! The Salafī does not speak ill of the Salafī even if he was young in age, or just a beginner [i.e. recently learned about Salafiyyah] or possess little knowledge. The Salafī loves all Salafīs, whether they be new or old.

As for the innovator, he may say Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb is a great man and that Rabīʿ ibn Hādī is a great man who we love, but at the same time speaking ill of others (salafīs). This does not benefit him, rather, he is untruthful. If he was truthful, he would have love for all Salafīs, young or old, new or seasoned.

So this is a sign of the people of innovation! They say we are with Ibn Taymiyyah whilst speaking ill of the Salafīs. They say we are with Ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb whilst speaking ill of the Salafīs. They are not sincere in their ascription to Salafiyyah, rather, they are being deceptive. The (true) Salafī loves all of the Salafīs, both the new ones and the old ones. So fear Allāh and have love for the Salafīs and speak nothing but good about them. Do not speak ill of them and cause fitnah for them and for yourselves. May Allāh bless you.

Benefit: Sincerity - The Means to Thabāt (Firmness upon the Truth)

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Subḥan Allāh, dear Muslim, take heed of the speech of our noble scholar below, nowadays, how many a person do you come across who has all sorts of criticism for Ahl al-Sunnah, their manners, their behaviour yet he has a thousand excuses for the ones who oppose the Sunnah? How many a person do you find making blind criticism or arguments against the people of Sunnah then looking to justify the criticism from any angle afterwards! They broaden the raḍīus of Salafiyyah to include almost anyone but amazingly they criticise those known for their Salafiyyah (for years)! Be sincere in all your affairs, may you be saved!! Shaykh Muḥammad bin Hādī (hafiẓahullāh) said: "So these people sell their hereafter for their present, so the affair of sincerity dear brothers is something great. And sincerity (ikhlās) is that a person does not intend by his actions except the face of Allāh the Mighty and Majestic, and the Hereafter. So he walks straight upon the truth and upon guidance and he does not let anything turn him away from it. This is the true thabaat (being firm upon the truth)... Although many of the people who cause corruption today, the majority of them are hidden, even if they ascribe to the Sunnah, they are criticized, even if they ascribe to the Sunnah. Rather we do not see them speaking harshly except against Ahl al-Sunnah, and on the opposite, they make excuses for the people of desires and they defend them and they justify their falsehood! Sometimes they even say that they [the people of falsehood] are Salafīs and other times they say: "We can not take them out of Salafīyyah" and the likes of these statements. So they open their chest to the likes of these individuals; however, the Salafīs are not safe from their tongues. So these individuals, their danger is greater upon the Salafīs than the people of desires and innovation so be warned from them O my sons and brothers. Be warned from them at all costs! So if you see those from whom the likes of this statement comes and he does not open his chest to the people of the sunnah and does not make excuses for them; however, opens his chest for those who are criticized, and seeks to make excuses for them then he by Allāh is a liar!!! Even if his status and rank reach the reigns of the heavens!1

Benefit: Some of the Signs of Ahl al-Sunnah

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

From the Signs of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-al-Jamāʿah:

Firstly: that they refrain from transgressing the boundaries of knowledge, they speak with that which they have knowledge of, and refrain from speaking about that which they do not have knowledge of. Allāh mentions:
And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge.
[Surah al-Isrāʾ, 17:36]

This means that one must not falsely accuse or say something of which he has no knowledge of about Allāh. Rather, stop at your limits, if you know something of beneficial knowledge then speak with it, and if you know not about something then refrain (from speaking about it) until you gain knowledge regarding it. This is the way of Ahl al-Īmān.

Secondly: from the signs (of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-al-Jamāʿah) is that they resort to [utilising] the ḥalāl whilst doing away with the ḥarām. They utilise the good whilst doing away with the bad with regards to their foods, drinks, clothes and marriages. They confine themselves to that which Allāh has made ḥalāl for them and they refrain from that which Allāh has made ḥarām for them. Allāh mentions describing the Messenger (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam):

And makes lawful for them the good things and prohibits for them the evil
[Surah al-Aʿrāf, 7:157]

Benefit: The Complaint - Every Seminar Is About Manhaj

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

At the recent Determining the Straight Path seminar, Shaykh Ḥasan ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Banna was asked about a doubt that has been spread amongst the sisters: "Every conference is about manhaj and bidʿah". Of course, this is an exaggeration seeing that many of the conferences are not themed upon those topics (see Previous Events at TROID). Nonetheless, it is true that many of the lectures and topics centre upon Tawḥīd, Sunnah, Bidʿah, Wʿaláʾ wa-al-Barāʾ etc. This is because, in the grand scale of things, this is what is important to the listener. Shaykh Ḥasan explains how this is the foundation of giving daʿwah, the way of the scholars past and present. Also, that to not mention the fitnah or to not speak against the innovator would only leave the Muslims susceptible to their snare. It is also important to note that this approach (too much manhaj etc.) is often an arrow from the arrows shot by Ahl al-Ḥawā, an initial bridge to gain the ear of the Salafī. So if you trace these complaints, you find that it is someone outside of the Salafī community who has sought to embed this idea as a bridge to gaining the ear of the Salafī (as speaking openly against the Scholars, or Salafīs in general, wouldn't be accepted at such an early stage), a step along the path to diverting him/her from a manhaj of clarity - so take heed!

Benefit: The Creed of Ahl al-Sunnah Was Known Well Before the Emergence of the Four Imāms

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah mentioned:

The creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-al-Jamāʿah is an ancient creed which was known well before Allāh created Abū Hanīfah, Mālik, al-Shāfiʿī and Aḥmad. It was the creed of the Companions who received it from their Prophet. Therefore, whoever opposes this creed is considered an innovator with Ahl al-Sunnah wa-al-Jamāʿah.

Our elder brother, Dāwūd Adīb explains the ideal Salafī woman; who she is, and how she deals with others in society.

"The salafiyyah woman is the one who understands the book and the sunnah as our rightly guided predecessors understood it..."

"The salafiyyah woman is the one who is compliant; submissive to what she hears from the statements of the Messenger of Allāh, ṣallallāhu ʿalayhī wa-sallam..."

"The salafiyyah woman is the one who mentions clearly and explicitly her ʿaqīdah, especially in times of fitnah...."

"The salafiyyah woman is the one who tries her best to try to stay far away from the fitnah...."

Benefit: The Main Body of Salafis in Your Land Know Your Reality

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Shaykh ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yaḥyá al-Muʿalimī (رحمه الله) mentioned:

The narrator who is severely criticized by the people of Ḥadīth in his land is not increased by the praise of foreigners except in loss. This is because he deliberately causes confusion regarding his condition. He embellishes himself—to these foreigners—with correct narrations, so they assume that this is his state of affair, and based upon this, they praise him. However, the people of his land know his reality!

Benefit: The Necessity of Following the Salaf al-Ṣāliḥ

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Stated ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz (d.101H), “Those who have preceded, they stopped upon knowledge, they restrained due to penetrating insight, and they were the keenest in uncovering the affairs. Furthermore, if the guidance is what you are upon, then they have preceded you in it. And if you say that affairs were invented after them, then nothing was invented, except by one who follows other than their path and prefers himself over them. Indeed, they spoke about it with that which suffices, and they described from it that which satisfies. So whatever is below them is deficient and whatever is above them is confinement. Indeed, there were people below them, so they worked in vain. And others turned away from them, so they fell into extremism. Indeed, they were in between that, upon straight guidance.” Ḥasan: Related by Ibn Waddāh in al-Bida’ wan-Nahee ’anhaa (no. 77).

The Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhī wa-sallam) said, “The stars are the protectors of the heavens, so when the stars go, whatever has been promised to the heavens will occur.  And I am the protector for my Companions, so when I go, whatever has been promised to my Companions will occur.  And my Companions are the protectors of my Ummah, so when my Companions go, whatever has been promised to my Ummah will occur.”  It is related by Muslim (4/1961) from the ḥadīth of Saʿīd Ibn Abī Burdah, from his father.

Benefit: The Objective to Water Down the Salafī Daʿwah to Facilitate Ahl al-Bidʿah

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

I say: There has come about in this time of ours, he who thinks that he is upon the methodology of the Salaf while in fact he is not. Rather, there is he who applies the name ‘al-Salafīyyah’ to the modern partisan groups of which some of them are upon the ideology of the Khawārij and think that the common denominator between them is al-Salafīyyah. This is as a result of an abundance of ignorance and the scarcity of knowledge, as Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymīyyah has said. Or it is that the objective is to water down the Da’watus-Salafīyyah which is predicated upon the Book and the authentic Sunnah, with the understanding of the Salafus-Ṣāliḥ so (as to facilitate) the entrance of the deviant groups into the realm of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jamāʿah.1

Benefit: The People of Innovation Continue to Misrepresent Islām and Salafīyyah

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Shaykh Muḥammad Ghālib al-‘Umarī (حفظه الله) said on 27th December 2016:

The methodology of the Salaf—and the Companions (رضي الله عنهم) are at the head of them—is totally distant from rebelling against the ruler and calling for revolutions and upheavals. ِAnd whoever opposes that, then between them and us are the narrations.

Two groups have participated in misrepresenting the methodology of the Salaf:
[1] The callers to takfīr, because they unjustly ascribe to it [the methodology of the Salaf].
[2] The callers to liberalism, because they wrongfully ascribe takfīr to this methodology [of the Salaf].

In the same way that Islām was oppressed, Salafīyyah—which is following the Pious Predecessors of the Ummah, and the Companions (رضي الله عنهم) are at the head of them—was oppressed when the callers to takfīr and bombings wrongfully ascribed themselves to it [Salafīyyah].

Benefit: The Ruling on Listening to Unknown Speakers?

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

What is the Ruling on Listening to Unknown Speakers and Taking Knowledge from them?

The trials of today are very many. Innovations and mixing up innovators with the people of the sunnah and their outward call to the sunnah and Salafiyyah is widespread; for this reason, one should be cautious. ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿʿAbbās used to say, If a man said ‘I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhī wa-sallam) or the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhī wa-sallam) said,' we [used to] rush to him and went out to seek him, listening to him, but when the fitnah occurred they began asking about the men (who were narrating the knowledge) like how Ibn Seereen mentioned “We said: name to us your men” meaning they were known by whom they narrated from. So from there they would know if they would listen and accept or refuse and not listen. If that was the case in that time, then our time has more priority. It is a must that one determines and limits those whom he listens to, and from whom he reads from, and who he takes from, and (the works he) issues, and also who he sits with, this is very important. As for being a haatib layl (one who gathers wood at night, i.e. blindly, heedlessly), listing to everyone and those who are unknown. No, it is feared that a trail will befall this one. Surely, from the signs of success from Allāh and wanting good for his slave, it is uprightness and guidance that he helps him to sit, mix with and take from the people of the Sunnah. It is obligatory to have seriousness and diligence towards seeking out that which brings about success and guidance from Allāh, and Allāh is the one who grants success.

Benefit: The Scholars or the Callers?

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Shaykh ʿUbayd al-Jābirī comments on the verse below, clarifying an existing doubt:

شَهِدَ اللَّهُ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ وَأُولُو الْعِلْمِ قَائِمًا بِالْقِسْطِ ۚ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ
Allāh bears witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Him; and likewise, the angels and the people of knowledge bear witness: He who maintains justice, none has the right to be worshipped but Him, the All Mighty, the All Wise. [Surah al-ʿImrān, 3: 18]

Present in this verse is a refutation of some of those who ascribe to the daʾwah, who say: The caller (dāʿī) is better than the scholar. They use the argument that the caller is like the rain cloud, travelling from place to place, everyone benefits from it [i.e. the rain]. While the scholar is like a well, no one drinks from it except those who travel to it. Glorified is Allāh the Exalted! Are they more knowledgeable or Allāh? Who are the ones who testify to the oneness of Allāh [in this verse], the scholar or the caller? The scholar! Who are the inheritors of the prophets? The scholars, or the callers who travel from place to place? Some of them [i.e. callers] are not even able to recite Surah al-Fātihah correctly and do not know the pillars of al-Islām.

Corrupt reasoning and misinterpetation of the speech of Allāh and His Messenger (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) is the way of the people of innovation and desires; so be warned.

Benefit: War against the Salafīs | Peace with the People of Innovation

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Shaykh Rabīʿ’ ibn Hādī al-Madkhalī said:

"We have been afflicted in these days with those who falsely accuse true Salafīs of being extreme and harsh in al-Jarḥ wat-Ta’deel (praising and criticising) and in other areas. He wages war against them in the most severe fashion whilst he makes peace with the people of innovation and desires, heaping praise and commendations upon them.

So (you find that) he falls into tamyee’ when dealing with the people of innovation and at the same time he shows a destructive form of extremism towards the people of Sunnah and the truth.

His anger and his pleasure are in accordance to that which he desires and in agreement with those whom he aspires to embrace from the wealthy and rich."
