Benefit: Father Prohibits Son from the Gatherings of Knowledge?

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Question: Here in Yemen, there are centres of knowledge that belong to the people of Sunnah. Whenever I try to go, I am not able to except by tricking my father [i.e. telling him I will go elsewhere etc.], and after this (when he finds out), he becomes angry at me. What is the ruling on these actions of mine?

Answer: [Your] attending the sittings of the scholars of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-al-Jamāʿah and benefiting from them is considered to be from good actions, so your father does not have the right to prohibit you from them. Call your father with wisdom and forbearance so that he may accept it (i.e. attending the sittings of the scholars).

If he is upon other than the way of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamāʿah, then advise him and clarify to him with evidences that the way of Ahl al-Sunnah is the truth, and that it is the way the Prophet (ṣallal Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and his companions (raḍī Allāhu ʿanhum) were upon, and that it is obligatory that we take it [as a methodology], stick to it, and abandon everything that opposes it [i.e. the methodology of Ahl al-Sunnah]. Likewise, beware of falling short with regards to being dutiful to your father and showing him kindness, strive against your soul for this, and you will be rewarded in shāʾAllāh for being dutiful to your father and wanting good for both yourself and him.

Benefit: Fighting against the Khawārij Is Rewarded!

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Question: What is the meaning behind—the authentically agreed upon narration from the Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم)—when he said: There will arise near the end of time a people who are young in age with foolish, deficient intellects, they will speak with the speech of the best of creations, their īmān (faith) will not go beyond their throats, they will leave Islām just as the arrow goes through its game. So wherever you find them, fight them, for verily there will be a reward on the day of Judgment for the ones who fight them.

About whom was this narration mentioned about? And which time frame was the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) indicating?

Answer: This narration and that which is in it was said by the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) about a sect who are called 'al-Khawārij' due to their extremism in the religion and their expelling of Muslims (from Islām) because of sins which do not take someone out of Islām. They also rebelled against ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (may Allāh be pleased with him) and they refuted him on particular issues, so he (ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib) called them to the truth and debated them. Many of them returned to the truth and some of them remained (upon their false ideology). So when the aggression against the Muslims past its limit, ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (may Allāh be pleased with him) fought them and the Muslim leaders who came after him fought them as well, in accordance with the narration mentioned (in the question) and its meaning. There are remnants (of the Khawārij) till this very day, and the ruling upon them is general to everyone who holds their (Khārijī) beliefs in every time and place.

Translator's note: Without a doubt, a crucial method of fighting against the Khawārij (terrorist, renegades) is by speaking and writing against them at any and every given moment of opportunity, as our Scholars and their scholars and so on have been doing for centuries. There are many ways you could help your community, by collaborating with them in handing out material on the subject matter of terrorism and its ill effects or simply by guiding them to those who may help in educating them about the true Islamic beliefs with regards to the khawārij.
