Dear Brothers,
Assalamu Alaikum warahmathulahi wabarakathuhu.....May the peace and the blessings of Allah be on our beloved prophet(SAW),his companions and on the entire Muslim Ummah..

My question is what does Islam say about the Mom and Daughter in law relations?...We see in many families that Daughter-in-laws and Moms have always disputes at logger heads in home matters and also some Mom's torturing daughter in laws...So what is the Islamic point of view in regards to this....

Wassalam
Azeem

Wa alaykum as salām wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh brother Azeem,

The basis is that a Muslim should deal with another Muslim in a good manner. And particularly we need to deal with our elders with patience and in a kind manner.

I agree that in some situations particularly in Indo-Pak subcontinent because of our joint family system the daughter-in-law might ill-treat her mother-in-law and vice versa. But if the daughter-in-law is a good Muslimah she would treat the mother-in-law with patience because she is the mother of her husband. And if the mother-in-law is a good Muslimah she would treat the daughter-in-law gently and justly because she is the wife of her son.

Both these ladies have rights upon each other. The rights of a fellow Muslimah, the rights of being near relatives and if they are living in same house or close by then the rights of a neighbor.

The son has a responsibility too. He should not only be just but also deal kindly and in a beautiful manner with both.

If the daughter-in-law sincerely behaves with her mother-in-law as if she was her own mother and if the mother-in-law sicerely treats her daughter-in-law as her own daughter then inshAllaah there won't be any problem.

May Allaah guide our moms and wives. Aameen.

wa salāmu alaykum,
Sajid Chauhan al-Hindee
