As-Salaamu ‘Alaykum

Bismillah,

Shaykh Muhammad b. Abdul-Wahhaab al-‘Aqeel, may Allah protect him, mentioned that from the characteristics of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jamaa’ah is their diligence in adhering to narrations of the Salaf.

Therefore, with the blessed month of Ramaḍān approaching, I thought it may be beneficial to present some fiqh of the Companions pertaining to fasting and other issues, along with brief information about them taken from Ibn Hajr’s “at-Taqreeb.”

I ask Allah, the Most High, to make this effort sincere and a benefit to His servants.

(The Intention and Fasting)

The Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace upon him, said: “Whoever does not make his intention to fast, at night, before Fajr, then there is no fast for him.” (1)

Hafsah b. 'Umar b. al-Khattaab (2) (d. 54 AH), may Allah be pleased with her, said: “There is no fast for whoever does not make his or her intention before Fajr.” (3)

__________

(1) Authenticated by Imām al-Albānī. See al-Irwaa: 4/25

(2) The daughter of ‘Umar b. al-Khattaab and wife of the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace upon him.

(The Pre-Dawn Meal)

As-Salaamu 'Alaykum,

Bismillah,

The Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace upon him, said: “Have a pre-dawn meal. Indeed, in it are blessings.” [al-Bukhārī and Muslim]

On the authority of Abee Waleed ‘Abdullah Ibn Haarith al-Ansaaree (1): “A group of the companions of the Prophet, prayers and peace upon him, said: ‘Have a pre-dawn meal, even if it’s a swallow of water.’ ” (2)

__________

(1) Upright and accurate in his narrations (thiqah), a mid-level taabi’ee, and relative of [the well-known] Ibn Sireen

(2) Zakariyyah Ghulaam, “What has been Authentically Reported on the Companions Pertaining to Fiqh,” 1/113

(Breaking Fast Immediately)

As-Salaamu 'Alaykum,

Bismillah,

The Messenger of Allah, may Allah be pleased with him said, “People are upon good as long as they break their fast at its earliest time.” [al-Bukhārī and Muslim]

On the authority of ‘Amr Ibn Maymarn (1) Ibn al-Awdee (2) [d. 74 AH] (2): “The Companions of the Messenger of Allah were the fastest people to break their fast (3) and the slowest people to have their pre-dawn meal (4). (5)

__________

(1) [TN]: This, “Maymarn,” is what is found in the book (footnote #5). However, what is correct is “Maymoon” as found in Taqreeb at-Tatheeb, 746.

(2) [TN]: A well-known mukhadram: Someone who witnessed pre-Islamic times (al-Jaahiliyyah) and Islam, yet, he never saw the Prophet, prayers and peace upon him. [See Nuzhah an-Nathr, 139.]

He was trustworthy and precise (thiqah). He was also a diligent worshipper; he resided in Koofaa.

(3) [TN]: Meaning at its earliest time

(4) [TN]: Meaning at its latest time

(5): Zakariyyah Ghulaam, What has been Authentically Reported on the Companions Pertaining to Fiqh, 1/118
