Al-Wājib, Al-Mustahhab, And Al-Mubāḥ was created by ummsufyaan
In the Name of Allāh, the Extremely Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy.

Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān, may Allāh preserve his soul, stated:(1)
  • al-Wājib [obligatory]: the performer of the deed is rewarded and the abstainer is punished.
  • al-Mustaḥab [recommended]: the performer is rewarded and the abstainer is not punished.
  • al-Mubāḥ [permissible] is the deed that is not rewarded if performed, nor punished if avoided and abandoned.(2)

(1) Al-Fawzān, Sharḥ al-Uṣūl ath-Thalāthah.

(2) TN: These legislative rulings are better known as (الأحكام التكليفية ); they are five in number but the shaykh mentions three. The remaining two are:
  • al-Ḥarām [forbidden]: it is the complete opposite of al-Wājib. The performer is liable to punishment, while the abstainer is rewarded.
  • al-Makrūh [disliked]. It is the opposite of al-Mustaḥḥab. The performer is not punished, while the abstainer is rewarded.
