Asalām u alaikum,
A friend of mine recently asked me about performing nafl ṣalāt. He was told that there were prescribed nafl ṣalāt,e.g the two after Maghrib ṣalāt, but he was wondering about performing nafl ṣalāt whenever he felt like it, such as when he was feeling depressed about something. Please reply soon, May Allah reward you all, Ameen.

1. The supererogatory prayers can be divided into different categories.
2. There are an-Nawaafil al-Mutlaqah (they have no fixed time, not linked
to any particular reason and not performed along with an obligatory
prayer) and secondly an-Nawaafil that are prayed for a particular reason like tahiyyatul masjid which is prayed upon entering the masjid.
3. As for the an-Nawaafil al-Mutlaqah then the scholars convey ijmaa’
that it is impermissible to pray these Salawaat at times when prayer is prohibited, and they are not valid/accepted at these times.
4. As for the supererogatory prayers that are prayed for a reason, another
example is the two rak’ah performed after making ablution, then there is a difference of opinion about the permissibility of praying these nawaafil at times when prayer is prohibited.
5. With regard to the previous point then the three Imāms, Abū Haneefah,
Maalik and Ahmed (most famous stance in his school of thought) held that it is impermissible to pray any nafl prayer at times when prayer is prohibited whether it be an-Nawaafil al-Mutlaqah or an-Nawaafil that are prayed for a reason. Shaafi’ee believed that it was permissible to pray the nafl Ṣalāh that is observed for a particular reason and in one narration this is also attributed to Imam Ahmed. Shaykh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, and Abdur Rahmaan as-Sa’di took the latter position.
And Allaah knows best.
