The following are acts of Sunnah intended to be applied during wuḍūʾ. Whoever fulfils them will get additional reward and whoever leaves them off will not be blamed. Hence, the scholars call these acts, ‘the acts of Sunnah for wuḍūʾ, meaning, the recommended practices of wuḍūʾ.

  1. Using the miswāk (a twig-like toothbrush made from the arak tree): It is to be used while rinsing your mouth with water during wuḍūʾ. This is done in order to cleanse the mouth in preparation for the worship of Allāh, supplicating to Him and reciting the Qurʾān.

  2. Beginning wuḍūʾ by washing the hands thrice: This is done at the start of wuḍūʾ before washing your face according to many narrations. Likewise, your hands are used to wash the other limbs during wuḍūʾ, so washing them first assures purity for the following limbs.

  3. Beginning with rinsing the mouth and nose before washing the face: This has been mentioned in a number of narrations from the Prophet ﷺ. You are not fasting, you should thoroughly rinse his mouth and nose. That which is intended by rinsing the mouth is making sure that water is spread everywhere inside the mouth. As for rinsing the nose, it means, sniffing water into your nose.

  4. Inserting one’s wet fingers into one’s (thick) beard: This should be done until the water reaches the insides of your beard. Also, washing the fingers and the toes, especially in-between them.

  5.  Beginning by washing the right limbs before the left: This is regarding the hands and feet.

  6. Washing the face, hands and feet thrice instead of once.
