The Meaning and Importance of Understanding and Implementing Tawḥīd
How does Tawḥīd relate to all of our affairs?
The introductory lecture in the London, Ontario series, "A Day of Islamic Knowledge" (April 2012). The speaker (Abū Ḥakīm) discusses the all-important topic of Tawḥīd, the message carried by all the Prophets and Messengers. Abū Ḥakīm mentions various ayāt from the Noble Qurʾān expounding upon this mighty topic. The lecture was carefully chosen due to the negligence and belittlement of this life-long research topic at the hands of many speakers and thinkers today, who have relegated it to libraries instead of the pulpits, choosing instead to pursue political topics. It is hoped that by understanding the essence of Tawḥīd, the listeners will understand the basis of true unity and brotherhood and where it's starting point originates.
إِنَّا عَرَضْنَا الْأَمَانَةَ عَلَى السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَالْجِبَالِ فَأَبَيْنَ أَن يَحْمِلْنَهَا وَأَشْفَقْنَ مِنْهَا وَحَمَلَهَا الْإِنسَانُ ۖ إِنَّهُ كَانَ ظَلُومًا جَهُولًا
We did indeed offer the Trust to the Heavens and the Earth and the Mountains; but they refused to undertake it, being afraid thereof: but man undertook it;- He was indeed unjust and foolish.
[Sūrah al-Aḥzāb, 33:72]
إِنَّ فِي خَلْقِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَاخْتِلَافِ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ لَآيَاتٍ لِّأُولِي الْأَلْبَابِ
Behold! in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of night and day,- there are indeed Signs for men of understanding.
[Sūrah al-Baqarah, 2:164]
قُلْ مَن رَّبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ قُلِ اللَّهُ ۚ قُلْ أَفَاتَّخَذْتُم مِّن دُونِهِ أَوْلِيَاءَ لَا يَمْلِكُونَ لِأَنفُسِهِمْ نَفْعًا وَلَا ضَرًّا ۚ قُلْ هَلْ يَسْتَوِي الْأَعْمَىٰ وَالْبَصِيرُ أَمْ هَلْ تَسْتَوِي الظُّلُمَاتُ وَالنُّورُ ۗ أَمْ جَعَلُوا لِلَّهِ شُرَكَاءَ خَلَقُوا كَخَلْقِهِ فَتَشَابَهَ الْخَلْقُ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ قُلِ اللَّهُ خَالِقُ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَهُوَ الْوَاحِدُ الْقَهَّارُ
Say: "Who is the Lord and Sustainer of the heavens and the earth?" Say: "(It is) Allāh." Say: "Do ye then take (for worship) protectors other than Him, such as have no power either for good or for harm to themselves?" Say: "Are the blind equal with those who see? Or the depths of darkness equal with light?" Or do they assign to Allāh partners who have created (anything) as He has created, so that the creation seemed to them similar? Say: "Allāh is the Creator of all things: He is the One, the Supreme and Irresistible."
