A Statement Concerning the Attempted Arson at the TROID Building
On the night of Tuesday, February 28th, 2017, at approximately 1130 PM, the Fire Department was called to our location at 874-A Weston Rd. On the roof of the building was a small fire that appears to have been set deliberately. Currently, police and the fire marshal are investigating the root cause, and investigating who may have done this. At this time, there is no further update on the investigation.
The damage to the roof is minor, in the area of two square feet. There is no structural damage or interior damage. The centre is open today as usual. Many media outlets have covered the story and it is being treated seriously in Toronto and beyond.
TROID has been a part of the Mount Dennis mosaic for the last thirteen years and enjoys a strong relationship with members of the local community. We would like to thank everyone for their kindness and support, rallying around us and extending a helping hand. Our community is a culturally diverse mix of young and old, who congregate to learn more about their religion. We are also at the forefront of refuting and clarifying the dangers of extremism and terrorism. We have an extensive library of books, pamphlets and online resources to that effect.
We are pleased to see officials taking the matter very seriously, and we would like to thank them for their service and dedication.
We warmly invite everyone to learn more about Islām, to learn more about our centre and our community, especially those who may have some misgivings about Islām and Muslims,
O you who believe, stand persistently firm for Allāh as witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of the people [who were unjust to you] prevent you from being just to them. Be just, that is nearer to righteousness.
The Qurʾān: al-Māʾidah, 5:8
